Great tool to estimate the cost of that mobile app you've always dreamed of building.

How to track links or mentions across the web?

I have a rails app that lets users gain visibility into how their content is performing across the web.  It's easy enough to go into APIs and get information like number or retweets or comments on a Facebook post, but I'm curious, how do you tackle the programming feat of tracking something across the entire web?

For example, Twitter just launched 'embedded on these websites' (http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/1/4482322/twitter-embedded-websites-tracking-monitoring-events ) where users can see everywhere on the web where a YouTube video link is embedded. Another example is the Native Advertising Leaderboard (http://nativeadvertising.com/#/leaderboard) where users can sort content by the number of social actions that link has gotten across the web.  Even Mention (https://en.mention.net/), for example, can return all the times a phrase has been mentioned across the web.

Are these sites indexing a ton of sites and scraping content for links?  Is there some kind of API I'm missing?  I'm baffled and would greatly appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.  I'm open to reading materials, comments, any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Ah, thanks Dave.  It seems I just need to build a kind of backlink tracker, and that the key is in learning more about HTTP requests?

What will the next Facebook look like?

This awesome, thought provoking article bets the killer app of the future won't rely on the omnipresent contact lists that make adoption of new apps so fast and simple today.

Saw my first Google Glass in the wild yesterday at General Assembly. Not sure what to think yet, but this latest jailbreak may expand what's possible.

Think someone can hack the new iPhone's biometric fingerprint scanner?  These hackers are all offering a bounty to the first person who can lift a fingerprint from something and create a false positive on the iPhone scanner.

Nice article on food startups, their ability to scale, and their likelihood of success.  Like Casey Winters from GrubHub said, it's too bad he didn't address companies in the delivery space, but still an interesting article.

It's official.  This is the best way to pick color schemes for your next website.

The future is shrinking. The far future has less appeal to us now than it once did. Why?
