Gettin' yo hair did in Austin can be expensive! Many places will charge you over $100 just for bleach touch-up and toning, and yes running a business is expensive and I like supporting small businesses, but times are tough! So the solution for the past year for me has been going to the school, and it just happens to be super-convenient to me as well. Typically the cost with tip will run me about $30-40, but it goes up if you get toning and not just bleaching. You can opt for the same stylist each time, but I like to shake it up and get different students each time. If you go, do note that it will be about 3-3.5 hours, so either schedule off work if you are a MFer like me (hah!) or be sure to schedule earlier in the week to get a Saturday spot, or else they won't be available. The only bummer is they don't do Sundays, but I love this place otherwise!

I am not sure if anyone has mentioned their Bloody Good Mary, but it has a deviled egg half, small cube of cheese, and a piece of cured meat, and of course a green olive and a piece of celery. Have a few of those and you won't need an appetizer, but I can't be held responsible if you make that your actual meal! The mint julep I drank was pretty dang tasty as well. The onion stack we ordered was not that impressive, a little bit on the greasy side, but then again what do you expect? However, I have ordered the Philly Cheese Steak before and that was pretty amazing. Overall, the place has nice decor, and the personal TV's are great if you are watching sports. The patio is also inviting even when it is chilly as it provides fire!

My favorite item here is the veggie wrap with the works (excluding tomatoes because yuck). Couldn't tell you the calorie count on this bad boy, but assuming with the added tortilla plus hummus and guacamole on it, it probably isn't exactly health food, but he combination of flavors makes it super yummy. I always tell myself I am going to only eat the one half of the wrap to save for later, but always end up eating the whole thing just because it is that good. If you are aiming to try something a bit more on the healthy side, I would recommend the garden spot salad. Sans dressing, I believe it achieves dietary unicorn status as paleo and vegan! I rarely eat anything else but those two thigns from the menu because when you have a good thing, why deviate?

This bar is an essential stop on the Burnet Road bar crawl. No whiskey as they only serve beer, but on a Wednesday night do you really need to be drinking whiskey anyway? Live music on Fridays and Saturdays, never a cover. In addition to the decor of 50's movie icons, you will find pool tables, a friendly staff, and a jukebox that surprisingly has Combichrist and Neutral Milk Hotel in the musical selections. Before you go, remember to get a 20 from the ATM, because they don't take cash, but you won't need really any more as it is super cheap. In summary, this place rocks just about any day of the week.

When the line for the Starbuck's at Anderson/Shoal Creek is nearly 3 blocks of cars, you can drive down here and stop inside and there is barely anyone at this location, even around 7-8 AM! I bought a really cool leopard print sun dress here for about $15. The produce is usually fresher (and more expensive, though) than HEB. Oh, but they also provide paper bags instead of charging you extra like HEB.

This is the best deal for yoga in town. Their $29 membership can't be beat, you can only go to certain classes, but you have the opportunity to go to every different kind of class they offer (various elements, for example the metal focuses on strength) and every single day, so it comes out to less than $1 a class. I just got done with my groupon that they offered earlier this year, and I am hooked!

BookPeople is everything that you want an independent bookstore to have.Plenty of local authors and plenty of book signings. One time I saw this goth band playing in there on a Friday evening, no joke. The recommended books is a great way (yes I know Amazon has this, but this is more personal) to discover something a classic you may have never read. Very good selection (two stories of goodness) that rivals the "big box" chains and I think even a bigger selection of magazines. The only slight annoyance is that if you are to purchase coffee and books, you have to do it separately, oh by the way BREAKFAST TACOS, too!! It is a fantastic way to spend a Saturday downtown.
