Ever wondered what the design process looks like for a custom logo? I'm sharing some of my secrets on the blog today! http://www.elleandcompanydesign.com/blog/2015/6/15/my-process-for-creating-custom-client-logos
While there's definitely creativity and a basic design knowledge involved in creating a one-of-a-kind logo, there's also a system behind it all. I've always been curious about how other designers go about their creative process, so today I’m taking you behind the scenes to give you a peek at what my logo design process looks like from start to finish. 1. Start with inspiration Each creative approaches a project differently and draw...

Rich, familiar, and true were a few of the words Lori Hedrick Photography used to describe her brand at the outset of the design process. Looking at her new brand and website, I think we captured them! See all of the details on the blog today (and learn the significance behind those simple dots in her logo!): http://www.elleandcompanydesign.com/blog/2015/6/4/new-brand-website-design-for-lori-hedrick-photography
Before my 2-week design process begins, I have each of my design clients fill out a series of questionnaires about their brand, process, and website. One of my favorite, most telling questions seems so simple, but I refer to their thoughtful responses throughout the entire design process.  What are 10 adjectives that best describe your brand? Lori Hedrick described hers as real, close, caring, happy, familiar, easy, rich, and true. I'...

After a 1-day moving hiatus, I'm back with another Elle & Company business post! 8 of My Biggest Business Struggles (and how I've overcome them): http://www.elleandcompanydesign.com/blog/2015/6/3/8-of-my-biggest-business-struggles-and-how-ive-overcome-them
A week or two ago I wrote a post on 5 of my greatest design challenges, and I was sweetly surprised by the response I received from readers. It’s nice to know that my struggles are relatable, and I loved reading through the feedback from all of you. This week I thought it would be fun to share a similar post on a different topic: business. If you’re an entrepreneur and creative business person, I have a feeling that you can probably ...

"Hi Lauren, You may have addressed this in a post already, but is it your priority to increase the traffic on your site versus building your email list? If you've talked about this before... please point me to it. Love your work and wisdom! - Leslie"

I'm answering Leslie's question on the blog today! Take a look:
http://www.elleandcompanydesign.com/blog/2015/5/28/to-leslie-3-reasons-why-we-focus-more-on-site-traffic-than-our-email-list
I often receive emails from readers asking various questions on everything from Squarespace and Adobe Illustrator to mailing lists and finding a niche. And while I make every effort to answer each email, there aren't enough hours in the day to share the long, detailed response that some of them require (and deserve!). Sometimes it's even more helpful to turn these great questions into blog posts and share my answers with a greater au...

Are you launching an online product in the near future? I'm sharing our secrets for selling out of our first e-course on the blog today! http://www.elleandcompanydesign.com/blog/2015/7/2/how-to-create-a-buying-frenzy-for-your-online-product
After months of increasing the quality of our content and growing our readership, I decided to put my hard work to the test with the launch of the first Elle & Company e-course this past March. I was a little nervous; I knew it would be an honest look at whether the content marketing strategy that I had worked so hard to implement had truly paid off. So I waited by the computer as the clock struck 12:00pm and our 40 seats went up ...

New post! The benefits of autoresponders, creative ways to use them, and how to set one up in Mailchimp: http://www.elleandcompanydesign.com/blog/2015/6/30/how-to-create-an-autoresponder-for-your-mailing-list
I’ve discussed why mailing lists are important and I’ve shared about the ins and outs of using Mailchimp, but there’s one crucial piece to effectively utilizing a mailing list that I haven’t covered quite yet: autoresponders.  It seems too simple, but email automation is one of the most effective ways to gain the email addresses of those who are truly interested in your products and services. In fact, one survey by the Lenskold Group...

I talk about high quality content often on the Elle & Company blog, but today I'm defining exactly what that means. Visit the blog this morning to read 3 actionable steps for creating valuable, relevant blog posts! http://www.elleandcompanydesign.com/blog/2015/6/9/how-to-create-high-quality-content
If you’ve been following Elle & Company for any length of time, this won’t be the first time you’ve heard me talk about high quality content. I use that term often around here for one primary reason: it has the potential to revolutionize your blog and business. I’m living proof of this. A year ago I was struggling to find my niche and my voice on the Elle & Company blog. It wasn’t until I had a few revolutionary breakthroughs and sta...

The social marketing platform that (unintentionally) helped me land 2 job offers in 1 day: http://www.elleandcompanydesign.com/blog/2015/6/3/how-i-landed-2-job-offers-in-1-day
A few months months ago, Jake started encouraging me to up my game on LinkedIn because of it's power for marketing and networking. Truthfully, I didn't understand much about the social network and underestimated it's usefulness... until I received these 2 messages from LinkedIn within hours of each other: "I actually came across your LinkedIn profile as I'm looking for a Web Designer to fill a permanent position with one of my client...

On the blog today, I'm sharing a little bit about the change that initiated growth for our blog and business. I'm also giving you a sneak peek at the progress we've made on our 100k goal! http://www.elleandcompanydesign.com/blog/2015/5/31/what-caused-my-biggest-business-fail-and-an-update-on-our-100k-goal
If there's one thing I've learned these past few months about business, it's that strategy is fundamental to growth. When I first started Elle & Company, I was a 23-year old graphic designer who aspired to work full-time for myself. Even though I grew up in an entrepreneurial household, my dad's business venture and mine are very different. I didn't know the first thing about pricing, taxes, and marketing, and I was convinced that th...

Did you catch today's review of Purple Cow on the blog? Even if you haven't read the book, you're sure to gain a lot of great marketing insights in today's post!
http://www.elleandcompanydesign.com/blog/2015/5/27/striving-to-be-remarkable-a-review-of-purple-cow-by-seth-godin
Last month I introduced a new Elle & Company blog series called the Business Book Club. My hope with this series is to start a discussion, challenge one another to dive into great business resources, and learn more from the pros on what it takes to grow a successful business.  The first book selection for May was Purple Cow by Seth Godin. Although this book is small (I finished it within a few quick fights between Charlotte and Grand...

Story
Tagline
Elle & Company is a blogging and design resource for creative entrepreneurs.
Introduction

I truly don’t remember a time when I wasn’t finding joy in design and organization. I was the artsy, type-A little girl who organized my mom’s shopping cart into neat sections, occupied myself for hours with a stack of copy paper and a box of crayons, and practiced my handwriting in my spare time. I never really grew out of it, and I followed my passion all the way to a graphic design degree from Virginia Tech a couple years ago.

Many of my peers pursued jobs at fast-paced design agencies after graduation, but the idea of designing for big businesses and corporations never interested me. Ultimately I wanted to get back to my own illustrative, colorful, feminine aesthetic that made me fall in love with design in the first place. So I started my own graphic design business, Elle & Company, and I spend my days designing brands and websites for creative entrepreneurs. I blog each weekday about life, design, and entrepreneurship, and I also have an online printable library that gives subscribers unlimited access to a collection of pretty paper goods, from art prints to resume templates and everything in between.

I’m blessed to call my life-long passion my full-time job. I absolutely love what I do!

When I'm not designing or blogging for Elle & Company, you can find me hanging out at the coffee shop, dancing in the kitchen/cooking with my husband, Jake, or exploring Charlotte, NC.
