I collect nature items because I always try to draw illustrations from real objects not just reference photos. I have an exciting drawing project coming up (tell you about it when I’m done) where I need to come up with a bunch of new illustrations. So I decided that I wanted to have something to draw from so here’s some compositions I put together to help me with fresh ideas. My set of antlers, some feathers and fresh flowers (fave).

My photo walk along the river... #greatlakes #maumeeriver #toledoohio #ohio #photowalk #gooutside
We’ve had a mild winter so far so life along the river has been quieter. It makes me think of spring a bit earlier than usual which makes me think of planning for summer. Summer means going to Lake Michigan, exploring and being outside as much as possible. It was a clear crisp day when I went on my photo walk yesterday. A little windy but sunny. I really like the simple color palette in these photos…blue, black, grey, brown and white hinti...

On the blog today...how I add color to black and white photos in my art journal #artjournal #mixedmedia #photo #scrapbooking #crafts #diycraft #healing
A great inexpensive way to use all the inspiration photos that I take (I’m sure you take a lot of photos too) is to print them in black and white on plain old copy paper. By printing them in this way I’m not using up color ink, expensive photo paper or having to get them printed. I try to place a few on the page I print so I can get several photos at once. Because I print in greyscale, I don’t convert my photos…

These colorful bits of line work start out as simple washes of watercolors. I follow up with my trusty Sakura Gelly Roll white pens (love them) to create simple patterns in between rows of lines. I find line work to be relaxing.

The University of Toledo Medical Center has given me the honor to be the guest speaker at their 2016 Health Campus Artist Showcase. It is on Friday, January 29th from 4-6P at the Mulford Library. My lecture is called “Art & Creative Wellness” where I will talk about my “art for your health” story. I am very excited to be part of this wonderful event. The lecture will be followed by light refreshments while viewing the art of faculty, staff and...

Photos using a Canon Selphy for art journaling #canonselphy #canon #artjournal #scrapbooking #greatlakes #lakemichigan
I bought a new toy over the holiday…a Canon Selphy. I’ve been wanting to get a small photo printer that I can take with me and I’m loving it. It was on sale for ~$80 when I bought it and the the color ink paper set is $34. It contains enough ink and paper for 108, 4x 6 inch prints. The prints can be printed borderless and may be used as post cards too. Sending a postcard to grandparents might be fun! I’ve been catching…

I was honored to be the guest speaker at the University of Toledo’s Health Science Campus Artist Showcase this past Friday. I had a great time meeting all the artists and sharing my message of creative wellness. Check out how creative people in science are! Here’s a small sampling of the art on display at the library. Sorry for the glare on the photos. Paul Brand, Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of Physiology & Pharmacology, College of...

I’m working on coloring pages. Some are seasonal coloring pages for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day & Easter. Here’s a couple that I’ve finished. I need to re-stock (from the holidays) what I have in the local markets and galleries where my work is being sold. I’m also considering them as downloads…I’ll keep you posted. The pages still need to be “senior citizen” tested by my Mom who gives me feedback. She says the bold lines really help w...

Sharing my altered medical dictionary pages on the blog today! #anatomy #medical #health #medicalillustration #nurse
I recently came across a tattered 1934 medical dictionary that had some wonderful illustrations. As a nurse, I find these old anatomical illustrations beautiful (and informative too). I decided that I would alter the pages (the book was headed for the trash) by drawing frames around the illustration using Sakura Gelly Roll pens. These will probably end up in my shop at sometime. If interested in any of these just email me at lauramillerartist...
