"Ray Rice is a professional football player for the Baltimore Ravens. Even if you're not an avid NFL fan, you might be familiar with his name this week because it has absolutely lit up headlines. What happened to make Rice the topic of so many discussions? He was caught on videotape dragging his wife out of an elevator in an Atlantic City, New Jersey, casino after punching her hard enough to knock her unconscious. Although it could, the story doesn't end there. The NFL's response was equally brutal: a two-game suspension. Is the NFL misogynistic? You bet." - +Galit Breen

Social media has given women the platform to flex their "women have rights, too" voices. In light of the Ray Rice, Stephen A. Smith, misogyny in the NFL debacle, I think it's time we speak up and out in every venue — male dominated, or not. I'm not well spoken about the NFL, but I have an opinion about this, and so should you.

On the heels of the ridiculous viral Kickstarter campaign where a guy raised over $30,000 to make potato salad — for real — I welcome using crowdfunding to get topics that actually matter into the spotlight, aka our Facebook feeds. What can I say? I enjoy viral stories with a heavy side of social awareness.

What do you think?
Crowdfunding is the new black. And why not? It's an excellent way to raise money for a cause, dream or situation that's important to someone. True creativity knows no bounds, as demonstrated by a black woman who wants to raise enough money — $135,000, to be exact — to buy some white privilege for herself.

How cool!

When completed in December of 2017, the Tree House apartment building in Singapore will host the world’s largest vertical garden. The building’s enormous green wall measures nearly 25,000 sq. ft. and is expected to save more than $500,000/year in energy and water costs, not to mention look really cool.

I love absolutely everything about this. To me, it's what parenting is about. Putting aside our own expectations and "plans" or whatever else we have in mind and being what our kids need to us to be.
Here is a story that could have had a very different ending if this child's parents were different.

"Here’s a sure-fire way to know that you hate women: when an incident of intimate partner violence in which a man knocks a woman unconscious gains national attention and every question or comment you think to make has to do with her behavior, you really hate women. Like, despise.

There is no other explanation. There is no 'I need all the facts.' There is no excuse. You hate women. Own it.

Now, you probably don’t believe you hate women. You probably honestly think you’re being an objective observer whose only interest is the truth. You are delusional."

"Having a baby is one of the biggest — and most expensive — money milestones people will face. It has a major impact on parents’ financial situations,” says Kimberly Clouse, a mother of two and Chief Client Advocate at +Covestor. “Middle-income families with a child born in 2012 can expect to spend over $240,000 over 17 years, according to a U.S. Agriculture Department report.”

My most recent article on +GuideVine shares tips on how to budget when you have a new baby. #parenting #finances #budgeting
The average cost of raising a child for 17 years is $240,000. If you're a new parent, use these tips and tricks to learn how to budget with a new baby.

I wrote a post for +GoldieBlox that I'm excited about! #adoption #parenting
“We're all different, but different is good,” my son said. He'd taken a seat on the couch between my husband and me and held his arm against mine. At 7 years old, he does that far less frequently than he used to, but occasionally, he reminds himself — out loud for extra reassurance — that ...

Good parents leave their kids in hot cars. You could do it, too.

http://www.allparenting.com/my-family/articles/971441/good-parents-forget-their-kids-in-hot-cars-you-could-do-it-too

Do you believe only negligent, "bad" parents forget their kids in cars? Surely, you'd never accidentally leave your baby or toddler locked in a car all day, right? It makes us feel better to believe we're not capable of making such a horrible mistake, but the truth is that children who have been accidentally left in vehicles and died had all sorts of parents, and plenty of them were "good." Instead of blaming, we should learn how this happens and what we can do to prevent it. #parenting #safety
