Why do we believe in the value of cultural exchanges?

We urge families to not let an experience that didn't go perfectly to stop them from hosting again -- just like we don't send students home just because they may not have "fit" well into their first host family. This is a sensitive subject, we know that. But we urge everyone to remember that dealing with people -- especially when those people all come from very different backgrounds -- isn't a matter of waving a magic wand.

If you really work at not just translating word by word but rather try to see the why and how of another language, you will come to view your own universe differently. That might be a bit unsettling … but it’s exciting, too. And that's part of what international cultural exchanges are all about.

The idea of actionable climate knowledge reflects the reality that an individual making a climate-relevant decision is doing so on the basis of her ability to answer the two questions that govern all human decision-making: “is it worth it,” and “can I do it?” Each of us uses different information to answer the two questions....What "actionable" knowledge do you need?

Over the years, we have learned so much about the challenges involved when students leave their countries to experience a different culture on a cultural exchange. We've had success on our blog and website, and hope to take it further with our Patreon page.
