Today at my coffee shop. An older Vietnam Veteran Airman came in for his medical appt. As he was leaving he stopped by to set his things on a chair, I went up to him, I said "Thank ypu so much & Welcome Home Airman. He stuck his fist out & we fist bumped.
He was going to buy some coffee & I indicated that I was buying his coffee. While I got the usual gruff, "I pay my own way" response, I said I would be honored to give back to a fellow service member.
He reluctantly allowed me after I said if he wished he could leave a tip for the owner. He liked that idea.
As he was drinking his coffee & eating his pastry, he sat & talked with me. He spoke of how hard today was for him as he lost many comrades, but it was even harder today bcs he just lost his father this year, who also served.
As he was getting ready to leave, he asked what branch & where did I serve. I told him.....he said, an emphatic "Thank you" & held out his fist again, we fist bumped & he left witb a brighter face & a little more lighter on his feet.
Sometimes all it takes is a fist bump & a listening ear.
