Introduction

Writer, editor, relentless optimist, awe junkie.

lauragraceweldon.com/blog-2

I'm the author of Free Range Learning, a handbook of natural learning, and a collection of poetry titled TendingMy upcoming book is titled Subversive Cooking. I write and serve as editor for a number of periodicals, print and online.

My background includes teaching non-violence workshops, writing poetry with nursing home residents, facilitating support groups, and developing community enrichment workshops.

These days I mostly edit books, write, and do other hermit-y things. My poetry has won several minor awards, the most notable a third grade prize from Miss Barker (which included a chocolate bar.)

I live on a small farm with my family where we raise bees, cows, chickens, produce, and the occasional hair-brained scheme.

Let's use nature's example to create a living education.
We are living natural systems ourselves. Why not base a living education on what works in nature?

Do brain training programs like Lumosity work? Science says no. If only my dad could get back the hours he wasted "training" his brain.
Brain training programs exploit people like my dad. Get the facts.

Ok, so I am, perhaps, a little vindictive. Mostly knowing I could is enough though.

This article by Margaret Atwood is the absolute best I've read about climate change. She brings in the way cultural values are affected by types of energy capture, how art drives and is driven by values, and what we can still change. Absolutely brilliant writing.

The common root of all religions.
A dear friend travels every chance she gets. She's particularly drawn to see evocative paintings, carvings, and sculptures inspired by different faiths. But she's started to think she shouldn’t be ...

We were confronted with this choice Lisa, and chose to withdraw from school and homeschool. Here's what's interesting. When our homeschooling days looked anything like school, those ADD symptoms were there. It was only after we truly embraced more natural learning that all evidence of an "illness" went away. Here's our experience: lauragraceweldon.com/2012/01/02/school-add-isnt-homeschool-add/

For young children, the number of hours spent watching TV at the age of 29 months correlates to the likelihood he'll be bullied in sixth grade, says Linda Pagani of the University of Montreal and its affiliated CHU Sainte-Justine children's hospital.

Do you welcome or avoid visitors in your newborn's first days?
Plenty of other new mothers thrive on connecting soon after birth. Not me. I ask people to stay away for at least a week. That doesn't always go well....
