Epic is a genre that is hard, for purely practical reasons, to incorporate into my classes - both because of the size (epics are BIG) and also because of the style... but I am really pleased at the model of formulaic composition that the Kalevala is able to provide, especially the way it will surely remind students of folksongs and how they work. Here's a page from my Kalevala unit - so many lovely bits of formulaic composition and repetition right here all together as the dying maiden Aino puts an interdiction on the water in which she is drowning, plus the different animal messengers who might carry the news, and then the tears of her mother. Powerful stuff!
