Sentimental Sunday - Cemeteries Around the World
Way back at the end of February 2014, I had the opportunity to travel to my husband's country of birth: the Philippines. For those who don't know it, the Philippines is a group of about 7,000 islands that falls between the South China Sea and the Pacific Oc...

Friday Funny - Holy Smokes I'm Four!
“I started my blog FOUR years ago!” I said.  Cas’s reply,
“And then what happened?” Heh. What DID happen? Well, I unwittingly met my goal and then
realized that it might not be for me. Perhaps it’s more accurate to say that I
realized my motivation for beco...

Seeking advice from FTM2014 users (+Russ Worthington ?) just got new laptop with Windows 8. Downloaded, from original email link, FTM2014. I can't get it to start. I double checked; the download is fine (same exact files as on my non-8 computer). I seem to remember a thread about this, but I couldn't find it this morning. Help!! And, thanks!!! :-)

For any installer that doesn't seem to work, try "Run as Administrator". Should not have to do that, but often solves the problem. Well, the sympton ;-)

Surname Saturday - What the Hallinan??!
Hallinan. Maybe Hallinane. The first time I saw this name
was when I was researching my paternal great grandfather, James Cosgrove,
who  I knew (at the time) was born in “Ireland.”
Incredibly helpful, that. But I was so excited when I found out that the Bur...

Passing this along...

Many of you have heard that the State Historical Society of Iowa is facing drastic budget cuts that could compromise access to the state’s historical record. For now, our colleagues in Iowa have suggested we sign and promote an online petition being circulated by University of Iowa Professor Tyler Priest:

Hi friends -- please consider signing my petition in support of restoring funding to the State Historical Society of Iowa libraries and archives.  This situation is dire.  Click on link below.  Please circulate and post to social media as widely as possible.  We need to swamp the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs with our collective voice of support.

Please consider doing so and sharing this with friends and co-workers.
Budget cuts and reorganization plans for the State Historical Society of Iowa (SHSI) endanger the preservation of Iowa history contained in diaries, letters, photographs, maps, oral histories and other materials housed at the Society's two libraries in Des Moines and Iowa City.      Drastic reductions in operating hours and staff, the diversion of resources to unrelated activities, and recommendations to "streamline" the SHSI libraries threat...

Wisdom Wednesday - Getting Over Source Snobbery
I am eating my words. I am noshing on them like they are an
incredible delicacy. I had been a source snob (a nod to Dr. Thomas Jones for providing me with that phrase) ever since I started my own "do-over" about three years ago. I refused to acknowledge any...
