The questions for this chat were:
Q1: Should pre/early readers (ages 5-7) learn to code or should we wait until they are older? Why or why not?
Q2: What are your favorite apps, websites, or unplugged activities for Computer Science & coding with students ages 5-7 and why?
Q3: What is that ONE activity or lesson that hooks students age 5-7 into Computer Science / coding? Examples, please.
Q4: What does assessment/progress tracking look like for Computer Science / coding with students age 5-7? Examples?
Q5: How do you integrate Computer Science / coding into other areas of the curriculum for students age 5-7?

Help & Support  -

Hoping for some help.  I'm simply trying to write tilt sensor info to an SD card.  I have tested the card and can read and write to it outside of the tilt sensor sketch.  Also, the sensor data writes to the serial monitor, but for some reason, it's not recording the data to the SD card.  Pasting the code below:

/* Better Debouncer
 *
 * This debouncing circuit is more rugged, and will work with tilt switches!
 *
 * http://www.ladyada.net/learn/sensor/tilt.html
 */
 #include <Time.h>
 #include <SD.h>
const int chipSelect = 4;
int inPin = 2;         // the number of the input pin
int reading;           // the current reading from the input pin
int previous = LOW;    // the previous reading from the input pin
int count = 0;
time_t t=now();
//File myFile;

// the follow variables are long's because the time, measured in miliseconds,
// will quickly become a bigger number than can be stored in an int.
long time = 0;         // the last time the output pin was toggled
long debounce = 50;   // the debounce time, increase if the output flickers
String datastring=" ";
void setup()
{
  pinMode(inPin, INPUT);
  digitalWrite(inPin, HIGH);   // turn on the built in pull-up resistor
  Serial.begin(9600);
  pinMode(10,OUTPUT);

}

void loop()
{
  int switchstate;

  reading = digitalRead(inPin);
  // If the switch changed, due to bounce or pressing...
  if (reading != previous) {
    // reset the debouncing timer
    time = millis();
  }

  if ((millis() - time) > debounce) {
     // whatever the switch is at, its been there for a long time
     // so lets settle on it!
     switchstate = reading;
    if (switchstate==HIGH){
      datastring="UP";

    }
    else{
      datastring="DOWN";
    }
  }
      File myFile=SD.open("data.txt", FILE_WRITE);
      Serial.println(datastring);
      myFile.println(datastring);
      myFile.close();

  // Save the last reading so we keep a running tally
  previous = reading;
  delay(100);

}

Hi Everyone and Welcome! I teach CS in grades 8-12 at The Baldwin School, an all girls school near Philly.  My 8th grade class is an elective called Creative Computing.  So far we've done web design, game coding in Scratch, and some 3D printing and laser cutting.  The girls are now working on a self-directed project using some or all the skills they've learned so far.  We'll also be doing a data project and a robotics project this year.  Looking forward to seeing new ideas!
