Just a small distance away, Big Sur is a great day trip. @SeeMonterey: A Guide to the PCH Through Big Sur http://t.co/UDNKhOzZyw
I grew up in North Carolina, lived in South Carolina, spent a season in Costa Rica and South Africa, traveled all around Europe, and have called Seattle, San Francisco, and now Los Angeles, home, yet there's one place that I get more questions and requests about: Big Sur.

L’Auberge Carmel is a full-service Relais & Châteaux property located in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea just blocks from the famed Carmel Beach. Originally built in 1929, the historic hotel is known for its graceful architecture, personalized guest services, European-style and elegance. Individually designed guest rooms feature the finest fabrics and linens and enlarged bath areas with radiant floor heating.

The highlight of the hotel is its award-winning restaurant Aubergine. Executive Chef Justin Cogley, a Grand Chef Relais & Châteaux Grand Chef, and Executive Pastry Chef Ron Mendoza prepare skillful, ingredient-driven cuisine that celebrates the bounty of the region.

The ambiance of the hotel and restaurant blends romantic old-world charm with the luxury of modern amenities. The hotel was completely restored in 2004, reconfiguring all 20 guest rooms, the entrance and landscaping. A million dollar remodel in 2012 included extensive upgrades to all guest rooms, lobby, courtyard and Aubergine restaurant. The decor accents the quaintness of original coved plaster walls, French windows and antique doorknobs with modern updates such as Bose® docking stations, flat-panel TVs and wireless internet access. Individually designed enlarged bath areas feature antique travertine tiles with radiant floor heating, hand-hammered copper sinks and custom bath products. Guest rooms feature original black and white photography by Helmut Horn, and offer comfortably furnished seating areas. Luxurious designer beds are topped with romantic linens and down bedding. L’Auberge Carmel is one of the village-by-the-sea’s few full service inns offering valet parking, room service and highly personalized guest services.

The perfect Carmel escape getaway, L’Auberge Carmel is an easy stroll to the village's numerous art galleries, shops and restaurants. Guests can treat themselves to in-room spa services, the culinary artistry of our Forbes Five Star restaurant Aubergine or a sunset sail on the beautiful Monterey Bay with our curated guest packages.

L’Auberge Carmel consistently receives high rankings from seasoned travelers and travel publications including Conde Nast Traveler’s Top 25 Hotels in Northern California andTravel & Leisure’s Top 500 World’s Best Hotels List.

I just celebrated my 50th birthday at this wonderful hotel and had the best experience. All of the staff were so friendly and very helpful over my 2 night stay. I really appreciated the hand written birthday card that they left in my room along with a bottle of wine. I had a wonderful complementary breakfast each morning and it was more food than I could even finish. The location was perfect. I could walk to the beach, all the shops in town and the wine tasting rooms. I wish I could have stayed longer.

I described my experience and somehow it went missing! Here is a little bit since I do not feel like re-typing another one out: POOR SERVICE. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. BE AWARE!!!! There is a 24-hour cancellation policy for the restaurant in hotel. It is $50 per person (unless you speak with Maurine then it is $100 per person, but she won't admit to saying that because she has been there FIFTEEN years). Oh and Maurine also let me in on a little secret....depends on your excuse for canceling a reservation; sometimes they will charge you sometimes they will not. So think of a good excuse; apparently being honeymooners was not good enough. Remember to shower with ALL windows open or else smoke alarm will go off and fire department will show up and come into your room. I believe it is common since front desk person called and immediately asked if someone was showering...... The restaurant is not worth the price. We spent $340 for two people (a cheese plate add-on and ONE beer). Much better restaurants that are far less expensive. If you like good food, dine elsewhere...if you like "the name & the high-end atmosphere" then dine in hotel's restaurant, Aubertine. They will not tell you about cancellation policy so please make note ahead of time to call and cancel. I know this review sounds mean, but I am just telling the truth. If it helps one couple/family make a better decision on their stay in Carmel then it was worth it. I use these reviews quite often, and think it is only fair I write one for this experience. And may I add..I did try to contact hotel staff and let them make it right and they FAILED big time. I am young, only 23, and do not appreciate businesses or people in general not taking me seriously. I have only been in the working world/customer service world a little over a year. But I already know: the paying customer is always right, apologies may not solve everything but they help, never say something that is degrading or suggests the client is a liar, and to make things right when a client has been wronged. I think "one of the best hotels in Carmel" should know these just as well as a 23-year old does.

Spent two nights here in September 2012. AMAZING. Without hyperbole, I can say this was the BEST hotel experience I have ever had. The facility is an old (circa. 1920s) apartment building, so don't expect lots of space or high tech rooms. But, you can enjoy the beautiful central courtyard and the ambiance that only comes with age. The restaurant lives up to its reputation and I feel grossly unqualified to comment on it. Suffice to say, that for a middle-class Denverite foodie, this place was heaven. The four course menu, which I assume was modern French, blew our minds. Flavors, textures and methods that we had never experienced before all combined to leave us very disappointed in what Denver has to offer. By far, the best feature of both the hotel and the dining room are their shared staff. From the manager to the bellhop, everyone made us feel great. The concierge checked on whale watching opportunities for us, without being asked. The maitre d' and waitstaff pampered us, but did not make us feel like the impoverished yokels we clearly were. If you can afford it, L'Auberge is worth it.

I absolutely loved Aubergine, their tasting menu was extremely well executed, consistent, and playful. The chef really brought different flavors and textures together. This easily rivals the top restaurants in SF such as Benu, Coi, Crenn, Manresa. The service was top notch here as well.

Very disappointing! It should be told to people making reservations that dogs are allowed, because I have allergies and I was wondering why I had to keep using my asthma inhaler until I saw a dog in the lobby. Furthermore, the toilet in our room, which looked like had been unclogged numerous times previously (huge scratches on the bottom of it), clogged the morning we were leaving. We were told by the maintenance people that the toilet couldn't be unclogged, so we had to hurry up our packing and leave before we had planned. Very disappointing!!! I'll never go back.

enchanting!!! such a cute, beautifully decorated hotel, lounge, and restaurant! the staff was wonderful! sooo accommodating! we even got to meet the chef! the bread and gourmet butter alone was fantastic! three different types of salt, even! but then, we had the most amazing, exciting meal! great tasting menu and wine pairing! romantic, also! an excellent carmel dinner experience! when we replenish the cash flow after our meal, we shall definitely return again and again.
