Mike's Pics - It's summer so I'm a day late with this weeks pic...everything's a day late in summer. Just like it should be. A couple of nights ago I watched the Nina Simone documentary "What Happened, Miss Simone". Such a brilliant and vital artist and someone who was gradually crushed by the demands and expectations of the "real" world. She is needed now more than ever, but that's just being selfish...rest in peace Miss Simone, you gave us more than your fair share. https://youtu.be/fVQjGGJVSXc

MIke's Pics - When this album came out, over ten years ago, I couldn't stop listening to this song. I was searching for something yesterday and came across the cd hidden under a pile of stuff... the song is once again on repeat. Hearing it makes me want to play guitar, to write a song, to sing...it does what music should do, it inspires. Sun Kil Moon's Glen Tipton...it's addictive you've been warned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjA3EbKsl4E

Mike's Pics - Ornette Coleman died last week. Most people would probably be surprised at how influential his music was to Cowboy Junkies. In the early '80s Al and I moved from New York to London in search of post-punk rock nirvana, but we quickly became disillusioned with the music scene. The one thing that kept us moving forward was our discovery of free jazz: its' open ended, limitless possibilities, its' discarding of old patterns. The one set of musicians that loomed largest for us in that world was Ornette Coleman and his pioneering quartets of the early 60's. Al became fascinated with the melodic bass playing of Charlie Haden and I keyed in on Ornette's playing and how it didn't seem to be about the specific note being played, but more about how that note was being expressed...it was revelatory. On my bucket list is to record a cover of Ornette's Lonely Woman...perhaps now is the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRWfRsb4dU8

Mike's Pics - I woke up this morning at 5am to get my youngest daughter to her bus for a field trip to Montreal.....I think my wife made decaf...my day was shot...stumbling and fumbling around from one incomplete to task to another. I forgot to post my "pic", until now. So, in honour of my daughters field trip, here is one of the greatest rock anthems of all time from one of Montreal's greatest bands...take it away Arcade Fire...hopefully I'll re-group tomorrow...https://youtu.be/OCOfoDnCV_Y

Introduction
Latent Recordings has a long history dating back to around 1980 when it was formed by myself (Michael Timmins) and Alan Anton (bass player for Cowboy Junkies) to release music recorded by our first band Hunger Project and subsequently the music of our second band Germinal. It has gone through many different transformations over the decades, but its current incarnation started around 1999. After being with major labels for 10 years, we decided to revive it as the primary label for Cowboy Junkies. At this time we partnered with Maplemusic.com to sell cds directly from our website. We used Latent for all sorts of CJ projects over the next ten years, some of them offered exclusively on Latent Recordings, some exclusively web-based, others as imprints on larger labels or in conjunction with various distributors and through various P&D deals. In 2010 we decided to expand Latent’s mandate and began to record and release other artists.
