Preclinical work by the research team showed that female rats that were given hormones demonstrated a preference for larger doses of cocaine. This suggests that estrogen affects dopamine signaling. Dopamine is the transmitter associated with reward, learning, and motivation, and it plays a prominent role in addictive behaviors.

Doctors struggling with addictive issues face unique challenges. Although the rate of substance abuse among physicians is about the same as the rest of the general population – roughly 12% – medical professionals are more reluctant to seek professional treatment for fear of hurting their careers or even losing their medical licenses.

The DisposeRx kit allows patients to almost effortlessly get rid off excess pills. All anyone has to do is pour warm water and the contents of the packet into a prescription bottle, and the medication dissolves into a biodegradable goo than cannot be misused. Then bottle can then be safely thrown into the trash.

What Is Going to Be Done about the Opioid Crisis?

When he was first nominated, Secretary Azar listed the opioid crisis as one of his top priorities. In mid-March, the announced an upcoming three-part plan from President Donald Trump:

The prevention of addiction to legal opioids.
Reducing the supply of imported illegal drugs.
Providing better treatment for struggling substance abusers.
