Flying is safer than ever.

Though it's of little comfort to the families of crash victims, flying has gotten ever safer http://econ.st/1EFHuOC

I've started reading Humphrey Carpenter's excellent biography on Tolkien, and stumbled upon this image, which for Tolkien was the "origin of Gandalf."

Found this English language version of The Red Chapel. First time I see it in full. Heartbreaking really.

Sure, Viktor Yanukovych might have murdered protesters and Vladimir Putin might have invaded a sovereign country. But what about Hiroshima? And the genocide of Native Americans?

I really enjoyed The Hobbit 2 (much more than the first). Martin Freeman is a great choice for Bilbo, and it's good to see the dwarves get more nuances than "Gimli-the-comic-relief" from LOTR. Thorin especially is an interesting, developed character. Smaug is indeed stupendous, but not very good at catching dwarfs. And, oh, I saw it in 2D. Won't recommend 3D.
