Supercharging Android: Google to Acquire Motorola Mobility

Since its launch in November 2007, Android has not only dramatically increased consumer choice but also improved the entire mobile experience for users. Today, more than 150 million Android devices have been activated worldwide--with over 550,000 devices now lit up every day--through a network of about 39 manufacturers and 231 carriers in 123 countries. Given Android’s phenomenal success, we are always looking for new ways to supercharge the Android ecosystem. That is why I am so excited today to announce that we have agreed to acquire Motorola (

Motorola has a history of over 80 years of innovation in communications technology and products, and in the development of intellectual property, which have helped drive the remarkable revolution in mobile computing we are all enjoying today. Its many industry milestones include the introduction of the world’s first portable cell phone nearly 30 years ago, and the StarTAC--the smallest and lightest phone on earth at time of launch. In 2007, Motorola was a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance ( that worked to make Android the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. I have loved my Motorola phones from the StarTAC era up to the current DROIDs.

In 2008, Motorola bet big on Android as the sole operating system across all of its smartphone devices. It was a smart bet and we’re thrilled at the success they’ve achieved so far. We believe that their mobile business is on an upward trajectory and poised for explosive growth.

Motorola is also a market leader in the home devices and video solutions business. With the transition to Internet Protocol, we are excited to work together with Motorola and the industry to support our partners and cooperate with them to accelerate innovation in this space.

Motorola’s total commitment to Android in mobile devices is one of many reasons that there is a natural fit between our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers everywhere.

This acquisition will not change our commitment to run Android as an open platform. Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. We will run Motorola as a separate business. Many hardware partners have contributed to Android’s success and we look forward to continuing to work with all of them to deliver outstanding user experiences.

We recently explained ( how companies including Microsoft and Apple are banding together in anti-competitive patent attacks on Android. The U.S. Department of Justice had to intervene in the results of one recent patent auction to “protect competition and innovation in the open source software community” ( and it is currently looking into ( the results of the Nortel auction. Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies.

The combination of Google and Motorola will not only supercharge Android, but will also enhance competition and offer consumers accelerating innovation, greater choice, and wonderful user experiences. I am confident that these great experiences will create huge value for shareholders.

I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.

-Larry Page

Congrats! Very psyched to see where this is headed. Now you just need your own towers and a data plan. ;)
I am interested in seeing how it will work with Google. Are they going to continue with Android? Because Android is "open" other manufacturers are going to be using the same OS as Google/Motorola phones. So does Google reinvent a new OS just for itself? And in reinventing a new OS for it's new hardware (to compete against other hardware makers) does Google close it off?

Google having never been a hardware maker, this should be an interesting ride. Let's see if they know what they are in for.

Lots of if and what's in this purchase indeed.

and Congrats
and I am excited!
Very cool. I look forward to seeing what comes of this.
Exciting for Google's software with Motorola's ID design !
Christ, this came from nowhere! Great move by Google though.
With Motorola's 17,000 patents granted and over 7,000 patents pending with particular strength in 2G and 3G essential, You guys are pretty much patent lawsuit-proof.
Great acquisition! You guys will do great with it I am sure!
It'll be fun to see how this plays out. My initial read is that the winners on this deal are Motorola shareholders (who just lucked out), consumers (who will see a more competitive top-to-bottom product from Google and Motorola), Nokia (which suddenly looks much more likely to be acquired by Microsoft), Microsoft (in the short-term, as there's a chance Android partners that feel jilted might saber rattle and test Windows 7 Mobile devices), and Android itself, which will have a better showcase forum and patents shielding its manufacturing partners from onerous licensing fees.

Losers are HTC and Samsung (major Android partners who will now be Jan Brady's to Motorola's Marsha), carriers (which might not have a second iType, soup-to-nuts-style phone manufacturer to deal with), and Microsoft (now that Google has just acquired a treasure trove of IP Mr. Softy will lose its ability to muscle Android partners into paying licensing fees, hurting profits and giving said partners less of a reason to jump ship from Android to Windows 7).
Looking forward to great smartphones, tablets with stock Android! Oh yeah!
What. This is excellent if not extremely out of left field!
so is the next nexus coming from your very own mobile manufacturer now ?
haha the spirit of hold amiga? :D
So is Verizon ever getting an S2 or should I buy a Bionic?
Great news. Make the best of Motorola please.
very well done! congrats!!!!
Awesome guys! Take down the iEmpire!
뭔가 신기하게도 먼저 썼는데 그사이 엄청난 글들이 달리는군요.. ㅋㅋ
Sorry, you're 1 minute too late to keep me from getting the scoop... well at least in my circles
awesome news! Now do something good with it!
Very sharp Move Larry. Adult supervision is OBVIOUSLY not needed.
how HTC and others will react ? ;)
nice! larry! good 2 google!
Hopefully no more MotoBLUR. Stock android please.
Yu Rong
!!!so excited!!!
watch out guys. do not want DOJ on your back. Make sure all your deals keep enhancing competition.
Really nice move. Please open the bootoader for all the old Motorola Android phones now.
Congratulations! Good choice for both!
Yes.. been reading about this all morning.. Best.
I'm sure this will help in the ridiculous patent war going on.
Cool, I'm glad to be one of the first people to say congrats. Good luck, I hope your entry in the market will be successful, and I'm counting on it so that I can have awesome phones!
Pipebomb by Google! Great jobs guys. The nuclear patent war is on like Donkey Kong. Google Wins. Flawless Victory. Fatality.
This is an amazing twist in the evolution of Android, Google and maybe the whole mobile industry!!!!
PLEASE get rid of Blur....vanilla android FTW
Ace Lee
G Phone coming~~~~~~~
Hope this means strenghtening Motorola brand outside the US. I miss motorola on Czech market. Worked for the Czech branch few years ago...
Good news for both Google and Motorola. But especially for Motorola. :-)
This is the company that invented the cell phone
resistance is futile ... we are GOOGLE ...
+larry page >what about Samsung and HTC?
So once Google acquires Motorola, they would be facing Microsoft directly in patent war?
Wow, well done! Good job, to all involved at Google.
Congratulations, Mr. Page. Very excited for android. :)
What's the next acquisition? RIM.
Nice! Looking forward to even more Google devices in the future.
I hope Motorola Mobility continues and this doesn't dent the confidence of other Android licensees.
Have you thought about what a Microsoft / Nokia combination would look like ?
POW, Bitches! Patent THAT ass-whoopin....
Keep it objective and We will support you guys.
Congrats.. n Great moves.. looking forward for this...
Amazing!!! Just got a vision of the next nexus :drooling:
WTF!! OMG!! Hope this means the end of Motoblur!! :)
Great... I hope now the Google can defend itself against patent attacks.
Great move! But keep your other Android partners happy please. You're winning because you have variety.
apple should be worried.. finally google can control both software and hardware
Google is now a smartphone provider!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Kudos to you........Hope this proves to be a real success for Google
Wonder if the next nexus (prime already?) will already be motophone?
amazing...maybe i should buy a motorola phone for android...not samsung...
Gonna start signing all my posts with Forward-Looking Statement disclaimers.
Oh my god! It's true.....
Everyone at Motorola just got upgraded - they can now call themselves Google employees. Their lucky day.
Really a good news for Android phone.
TOTALLY AWESOME! This is nothing short of GREAT news for the Android platform and Google as a whole. And that slight of hand with the Nortel deal while you had Motorola palmed is a move that would impress even Penn and Teller! You sir are my HERO!

Motorola Mobility is one of our clients so I can't wait to get in the office and hear the talk.

Check and Mate Apple!
What does this mean for other manufacturers that run Android?
Nokia should have hedged its bets between Windows 8 and Android. That would have been great for consumers. I would think Windows 8 would be a good alternative phone but consumers should have had the choice. Since Windows 8 phone would be available from multiple vendors, the only losers really are the Nokia shareholders and the consumers who liked the earlier solidity of Nokia phones. Android on a Nokia phone would have been a great option
Motorola for Nexus!!!!
Are you going to open your own retail stores?
van ro
I discovered Android by Motorola (Milestone) and I trusted their promise after few years before I sweared to never buy a Motorola device anymore, and after 4 months i sold the phone: it was just embarrassing compared to iPhone.
Motorola is a living Zombie, good luck !
Congrats! Let the games begin!
I hope this doesn't drive away other manufacturers from Android. I thought one of the best strategies was for Google/Android to be unbiased towards manufacturers.
please look into motorola's issue of higher ray emittance!!
Amazing! Great job, Google. Remember "Don't be Evil" man...
The fact that this is necessary says something very negative about our current legal environment and software patent litigation.
Mich Wu
+1 碉堡了! 这下专利一大把啊~
congrats for this amazing step forward. looking forward for even better android products in the future!
Congratulation. I hope you manage to keep everybody (Samsung, HTC, SonyEricsson etc.) in the Android ecosystem happy.
For a 12.5 $ yesterday I got my good hour with a verdicchio wine bottle. It's a matter of tastes.
nice... it's a big news
I had doubt which manufacturer's Android phone fits me the best. No doubts now!
Best Day Ever! Google, keep up the good work!
Well done ! It's getting more interesting in the mobile phone market.
Not good for others device, Google will kill samsung?
Very interesting news. Hope this will be a good thing for both companies.
So excited, I'm looking forward for the upcoming new hard(ware) news!
Well, +Larry Page, this is an interesting move.
Surely Android has one benefit more now, as has ol' Moto Corp.
But as a passionate iPhone user, need one more feature in Android:
The ability to run iOS apps.
This calls for an Oprah moment: free Motorola Android phone for every Google+ user!
schweet, can't wait for apple to collapse once you guys give them some proper competition. Jobs can go to hell with his closed ecosystem designed for 2 year olds.
yc wang
maybe not a good deal
So what's remaining for Motorola when it sells mobile business to Google?
It shall be a good news to both Google and Moto. Gratz!
I guess I shall not mention what phone I am reading this in... ;-)
li zhao
Great news for both.
Shame that Motorola had the worst Android phones ... Hope that it will change. If the next Nexus is made by Motorola and still look and fell like the old Motos that will be the only Nexus I didn't buy.
Mr. +Larry Page, I could be wrong, but I believe what you meant to say was:

Aw made you look!
You a slave to a page in my rhyme book;
Gettin' Big,"big" money, playboy your time's up!

Something along those lines. Just saying, man...

Also: Thank you for slam dunking the ball, shattering the back board and winning the game this early on a Monday morning.

so cool!well done!
这个世界变化得太快了/呵呵 love this!!!
Holy *#%@! Not sure how I feel. I love my HTC Nexus One - never cared much for the Droids, other than the kick ass commercials. I guess it's really the patent portfolio they're buying.
Congratulations!!! 哈囉龜毛~
congrats! That's a great move! So, MS&Nokia vs Google&Motorola ...
Makes the microsoft/nokia partnership look like laurel and hardy! Well done google, keep it up.
A Motorola has been my really first cell-phone... maybe it will be also my Nexus one... ;-)
tragedy for Samsung & HTC..... :'(
Good stuff, however, could Goog waited for sometime, considering the current market scenario. Great stuff, it was high time, Goog made use of some cash. Congrats for the deal.
Very nice. Now er can see some killer hardware with killer software. Also hopefully blur will rest in peace now.
I'll be impressed when it can outperform my iphone. Waiting until then to make any kind of judgement.
Congrats!!!! ... +Larry Page & google team. That's nice and now I hope they will go for HTC or Tmobile....
I can't wait to see even more Google experience phones on the market... which I hope this will lead to.
Goodbye Patent Trolls, Goodbye Lame iphones . . Hello Future!
Samsung should focus on chips now....
WOW! This explains the pi bid for Nortel. Congrats
running hardware business isn't all that fun. but extraordinary times, extraordinary measures.
This is very exciting. I hope it strengthens Android's patent position and allows for more consumer-friendly phones.
威武啊!You are the best
This is awesome and huge! Motorola doesn't JUST make phones; they make those crappy cable boxes we've been using for ages!

Imagine Google software running our cable boxes!!!! I'm excited! :)
I guess I'm starting to see hope in the “bootloader unlock” department for my Droid 2 Global.

Anyway, this is a really nice news, totally made my day. Here's to hoping for a more open Android on Motorola handsets.
Congratulations! Is it just to be more equal to Apple and to confirm what they did right? Or will the excel and be more innovative than their big competitor? We will see!
I think Ballmer now needs some new chairs ... he he he ...
Also, now, what will happen to those companies who already run Android OS. Goog is competing with its own products. I bought a HTC fone recently, now, I am scared that you will stop supporting these devices!
It's so good . Congratulations!
qilin C
Big buy Congrats!!
Great. More lawsuits over software patents. Just what we DON'T need!
مبارکه ، ایشالله پیشرفت کنید !
i hope google smartphone and laptops newly launched in india.
I like it very much... waiting for 1st google smart phone
I hope that means we don't have to wait that long anymore to get updates for our xooms :-)
Wow... seriously did not expect this! Seems like a very good move.
Do I get faster updates on my Atrix? How about Motoblur?
It is a great news to all of android's fans
Very nice, this will hopefully help Motorola to opt for a more open and modern device policy as opposed to the closed bootloaders and slow version upgrades
+Steve Garon I disagree. I own a Defy and that is a very nice device unlike much of the competition. I did hear a lot of good things about the milestones as well. The only thing that could be improved would be to unlock the bootloader, but this problem has already been overcome by clever XDA-Hackers
Congratulations to google and android device maker.. this will give andoroid much needed power to defend patent war...
I'm wondering if Motorola let go their MotoBlur (even for older European devices such as Motorola Milestone 2) and give them fully functional and up to date Android for use the mobile in Europe without bugs witch are usual for Froyo 2.2 version..
Hello Moto, Goodbye Moto (hello patents)
Gmail, GPlus, GTalk… теперь и GMOTO. У Google великая мания превратить весь мир в большое Г!

Please don't screw up their ham radio division.
Haha. Made my day.
If I ever play chess against you guys, please don't crush me this brutally.
Hi Larry,
Congratulations on the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, this is fantastic news for Google, Android, Motorola Mobility and of course consumer choice. You have actually made my day :)
Hopefully Motorola will be able to release Android updates in a timely manner now.
Wow. You do mean business
This changes the ballgame. Will be interesting to watch what follows this.
It's really amazing!!!!
All cellphone makers' stocks should plunge on this news! Good for Google, Android, and supposedly for users
I hope this move does NOT mean Motorola is now a preferred anything. If this is a pure defensive move to acquire patents then all is good.
You should have done it earlier.
se van a haber un follón... que no van a saber donde se han metido
Maybe Motorola devices will be released on time now.
as Guy Kawasaki puts it, Holy Kaw!
Congratulations! Yet another example of Google's obsession with pioneers in Technology. Vint Cerf, Andy Rubin, and now a whole company. :-)
Larry, you just turned this into a great day!
Awesome news, congratulations! This will create new real options for Google, for example offering UMA Wi-Fi calling Android app on an open handset like the Nexus S without being handcuffed by T-Mobile USA. T-Mobile will give you their UMA Wi-Fi calling Android app only if you buy the Samsung Galaxy S subsidized with a two year contract but the deny their customers of Wi-Fi calling on essentially the same hardware, the Nexus S phone. Go figure!
Very excited about this! I've been a fan of Motorola hardware for a while!
Not too late, just right time, and lets start building great phones!
Wonderful news for all those who love google...very good step to protect against PATENT war...
Congratulation Larry Page. I think this was a logic next step for Google. I am looking forward to some fine products from Motorola in the future... ;-))
But remember to give partners a call to make sure they unsderstand why it happened, google still need more friends not enymies
Hi Larry i am Paul from Portugal and i have one idea to G+ put the PlaystionGoogle 3D on G+ maybe is hard wth codes, but will be a great sucess a Big Hug from Paulo!
+Johannes Maximilian Toball Just look at the sales figures between Samsung and Motorola. You'll see that most people prefer Samsung devices to Motorola devices... Same for HTC. Motorola has probably one of the worst Android sales but it has the best patents, that's why it makes sense that Google buys them.
My-my... Guys, you're really going to buy the entire World? :-)
This is the day v have been waiting for
Bien joué , j'espère que vous en ferez de quelque chose de bien.
Congrats Larry and Google. Great day for mobile innovation.
(Google Buys Motorola) Enough said! Congrats and please swallow Microsoft and Nokia down the road.
Congrats! This is fantastic news...
+Larry Page - so whens the new phone coming out? :) I was awaiting the mythical Nexus Prime, but i'm assuming you guys are gonna go a different route now...

any insight from the man himself would be epic.

Smart move to counter Apple & Microsoft in unnecessary patents wars which limit the progress of technologies ...Long Live Open Source...
Dose nexus one be supported to the upgrade in the future?
Good move.

My good old StarTAC and RAZR are now toys for my boys.

Let's hope that the XOOM evolves into what it promised to be:
a Google tablet and iPad Killer.

(Hello, Motorola Europe, Germany is still waiting...)
Carl Li
Nossa, assim o Google vai ser torna a verdadeira competidora contra a Apple.
Wow , master move , nobody saw this comming , someone must be choking on his coffee this morning in cupertino ,
Congrats on many levels one that you kept it from leaking and way to make sure you got a strong footprint with Android now. Just please keep the AOSP open thou or Ill be hurt
wating for your new product !!!!
This is certainly the start of a very interesting time to follow. Google has now put itself in the direct path of the attack by Microsoft on Android - Google is now an Android manufacturer itself and Microsoft will now take on Google through Motorola. Get the popcorn ready, sit back and watch this drama unfold.
On another note though, I think it is awesome - I'll gladly consider a Moto next time.
The challenge is ahead - will not be that easy, but that's why there are firms like google - for the hard work! Go google!
Way to go Google! Take on the Evil, but don't become them.
pan hao
Please drive a stake through the heart of MotoBLUR.
Too bad HTC phones are better...but moto was prob cheaper
Yeah, bravo, android number one!
obviously a big step for google, and motorola handsets undoubtedly will be better for it... but its hard to imagine the most talented Android developers not moving to the Motorola side of the fence. Perhaps the Android project needs to be firewalled to give other companies assurances that Android is truly open and unbiased?
y don't u create a google base here in the philippines?
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Google Power!!!!!!!!!
Good move!!..... will be interesting to say how the relationship with HTC continues to develop. Google+Motorola , Microsoft+Nokia...any spare change for RIM?
The future is truly mobile
Hao Wu
All Motorola phones will now come with just stock Android? please? No more MotoBlur nonsense mucking up the phone?
google V5
Not a good news for Motorolafans :(
Motorola will remain Motorola - who invented the mobile phone
I found myself at a communications crossroad, took the sign marked Google, "all in!"
Hi +Larry Page Thanx for G+ You (your) profile was an example for the "noise" problem in the stream. A lot of beautiful pictures and every commment to every single picture put it back to the top. But I mainly only want to read your keynotes and information to Google+. Please take a short look on the suggestion from Emma Ehrlich and others of "Public/Transparent Circles" .
If this will be implemented, you and all the others celebrities could post again public to a sort of topics.(I think you all will love this) And we hundred of thousends follower pick the public topic circles we want and add it.

The opposite of this the "Private/Invisible Circle" is nedded e.g for us to e.g. build a CityVille gamer circle without having all the public shares of them in the mainstream. My public shares should also not appear in their stream. So we could avoid to anoying members in the e.g "Family" circle with stuff they are not interesting in! (You know what I mean? :D )
