In celebration of the official arrival of spring, we took a scenic and snowy run down the river yesterday. There is an abundance of snow this year and we are lucky to have so much clean fresh water. Incidentally, today is World Water Day and at this time of year it is easy to see where our whitewater is born! We also saw eagles and deer (mule and whitetail) - including evidence of one unlucky whitetail at a snowy kill site.

It seems like a perfect time to give thanks. We had a great season and shared this slice of BC with so many wonderful, engaged and energetic people. We and our community survived one crazy summer between high water and then a record breaking fire season, evacuation alert (Rapid Creek Fire) and accompanying drought. Our season finished September 30 and our new product, the Redfish Special was a tremendous success (our very last run of the year provided thousands of spawning kokanee, 15 kingfishers and 113 bald eagles - yes, we had a sharp-eyed crew!). Thanks to incredible staff, namely Brynne, Rob and Lily whose flexibility and commitment kept everything seamless. And of course, thank you to the hundreds of adventurous spirits that joined us to make 2017 such a success!
The attached video was taken yesterday as the spawning season winds down. These fish are HUGE by average kokanee standards with the males exhibiting the phenomenal (almost grotesque relative to their svelte and shiny-silver lake form) morphological change with the large back hump (energy storage) and elongated lower jaws (fight off rivals). To live where these natural processes still occur is special, increasingly at risk and will be close to us this Thanksgiving. Thank you 2017 and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

As believers of combining work with play, this was us on a scouting run yesterday after the peak freshet. The river (including this wave- 'White Griz'), is in excellent shape. And remember, only 2 days left to qualify for the Early Bird Rate on an adventure in July, August or September!!

With a May 1 start to the season, the weekend was a perfect time to get down the river again and see how it's shaping up. Fun level and with so much snow still up there and with the still-cool conditions, we look set for a long and fat peak of run-off. An excellent time on the river for wildlife. While we were a bit early to coincide with the Gerrard rainbows (we often see them migrating up to Gerrard to spawn, peaking around Mothers Day), we did see a lot of other action including a raven stealing an egg from a Canada Goose nest, a small and flighty herd of cow elk and a bit more graphically, a bald eagle feeding on a Canada Goose carcass. A bit tricky photographing and rowing at the same time but you get the picture :). The circle of life continues on the Lardeau! Bring it on 2017!

Two weeks to go!!
Pre-season update - we have water! With a cool spring but high groundwater, the river is on track for this time of year (currently equivalent to a mid September level). The melt is behind and will likely give us a significant run-off. It will also help ensure capacity and we expect solid (read fun!) levels throughout the summer even should it be a hot and dry one (fingers crossed). A quick run on the river yesterday saw a ton of snow still but the rushing creeks and waterfalls are in great shape. It is hard to compare this season to last as both offer extreme variations with us having no low level snow this time last year and temps tickling 30 degrees. We have been seeing elk regularly and the Canada geese are nesting along the riverbanks. We are excited and geared up for our season start up on May 1!! Happy Easter everyone! Oly, Tamara and Scout.
