#LSNoutdoors  “We are very pleased that Bassmaster has recognized something we’ve known for years – that Mille Lacs Lake is a world-class smallmouth bass fishery. We’re thrilled that anglers from all across the nation will get to experience and see what Mille Lacs Lake and the surrounding community has to offer,” said DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr. “To boot, Bassmaster announced that the potential economic benefits could be $3.4 million for the region.”

First introduced on a limited basis in 2014 in an effort to address concerns from northern Ontario municipalities regarding nuisance bears in their communities, the pilot has been extended with some fairly significant changes.
The most substantial change involves the expansion of the hunt to all 88 Wildlife Management Units across Ontario that currently have a fall bear hunt.
"The OFAH congratulates the provincial government for recognizing that spring bear hunting is a valuable and sustainable wildlife management tool that offers many ecological, socioeconomic, and cultural benefits throughout the entire province," says Angelo Lombardo, OFAH Executive Director.

#LSNoutdoors  Pilot projects are a new process designed by the DNR and the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC) at the University of Minnesota. They provide opportunities to test a specific, rapid protocol for treatment of zebra mussel infestations. To be considered, an infestation must be limited in size and discovered early, and the DNR will require extensive pre- and post-treatment monitoring by the permittee to evaluate effectiveness. In most cases, the DNR will want to work with a lake association or similar stakeholder group.

#LSNoutdoors  The Powwow Trail was heavily impacted by the 2011 Pagami Creek Wildfire. Vigorous regrowth of vegetation and falling dead trees have thwarted efforts to keep the trail cleared following the fire. The Forest Service, partners, and volunteers have dedicated more resources to the Powwow Trail than to any other long distance hiking trail on the Forest in recent years. This includes a concerted effort by Forest Service and Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa crews that totaled more than 2,445 work hours in 2012 and 1,280 work hours in 2015. All of these combined efforts have yet to re-establish a recognizable tread in most locations around the trail.
