I think that for anyone who is serious about gaining muscular weight, a foundation of whole foods is absolutely necessary.

By whole foods I mean chicken breasts, fish, lean meats and the like for your lean protein intake; vegetables and fruits and beans, yams, oatmeal, whole grain rice and whole grain cereals for carbs; and fish and flax seed oil for essential fats.

These whole foods contain not just macronutrient calories but fiber, vitamins, and minerals which are necessary, not only for muscular growth but for health. If your body is healthy, you’re going to get greater muscular growth because your body is going to be nutritionally positioned in a way which optimizes the growth process.

Whole foods tend to break down more slowly, typically, than processed foods, and whole foods provide a sustained release of nutrients which you need throughout the day. So, from my perspective, you need to start by making sure that your whole food intake is correct and then use supplements intelligently to supplement the nutrition base of whole foods.

The bottom line on body fat (adipose tissue) is that it is a storehouse of excess calories. To get rid of fat, you must burn more calories than you take in on a daily basis. So being in a caloric deficit is important. Being in a caloric deficit is the one thing that both fatloss and weightloss programs have in common, but that’s where the similarities end.

While weightloss programs often focus on caloric restriction to the exclusion of all else, fat loss programs go further, addressing the composition of the food calories in the diet. This is vital to the proper nourishment of that all-important lean muscle tissue. A good fat loss diet consists of 40-45% carbs, 35-40% proteins and 20% fats.

@Jason Miller, thanks for the question. Peanut butter and almond butter are great sources of healthy mono and poly unsaturated fats. The key when discussing nut butters and any fats for that matter is understanding the total amount you are getting per meal or per day. Fats ideally should make up no more then 20% of your diet if your goal is to lose overall body fat while building / maintaining the muscle mass you do have. You have two goals as you embark on your program of getting into shape:

1) Strip unwanted bodyfat off.

To strip bodyfat off, you use a combination of:

a) Lowering caloric intake via the right diet.
b) Perform weight training and cardiovascular exercise.

2) Maintain/build lean muscle tissue.

To maintain/build lean muscle tissue, you need to:

a) Stimulate it through resistance training (weight training; I call it "bodybuilding!").
b) Consume sufficient calories to support muscle function and recovery.
c) Consume sufficient protein.
If any of these three factors are amiss, you will lose muscle tissue. And muscle tissue is your metabolic engine, enabling you to burn lots of calories, even at rest! Muscle is your friend.
