#ifihadglass  I would search for, tweak, and share recipes and videos of cooking techniques.  I would hang out with my friends and family on my bus commute, and track the progress of my violin lessons.  Oh, and cat videos.  Can't say no to those.

A visualization of prime numbers, and why they're prime.  Each arc radiating from the center represents a potential factor of numbers further out from the center; you can see when the "gaps" all line up to create a prime number.

Sorted my Chessex dice haul from Dragon*Con.  Note on the left: almost entirely full bags of d20s and d10s.  Note on the right: much smaller bags of everything else.  I feel I can blame DnD and White Wolf for this.

2012 Hugo award winners.  I'm pretty pleased at least in the categories I know anything about.  I'm particularly stoked about Among Others by Jo Walton winning the novel category, I really liked that book.  First book officially read with +Jason Wodicka, +Sylvia Wodicka, et al.

Now let's talk about the live stream.

For those not in the know, the Hugo ceremony was being live-streamed using Ustream to the Internet at large.  One of the viewings was in a big conference room at Dragon*Con, the culmination of a number of shared panels between WorldCon and Dragon*Con this year that were telepresence'd at both locations.

About two thirds of the way through the presentation, the nominees for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form) were announced, which included television clips from three episodes of Doctor Who and one from Community.  Moments into Neil Gaiman's acceptance speech for "The Doctor's Wife," the feed abruptly cut out, apparently because an automated process on Ustream's side recognized copyrighted material being broadcast through the stream.

Copyrighted material being broadcast at the motherfucking Hugo award ceremony with full permission from the owners of that material.

The stream didn't come back up at any point after being cut, so even though WorldCon attempted to allow anyone across the world the ability to view this ceremony in realtime, an overzealous copyright-infringement police-bot made sure nobody outside Chicago was able to see the end of the ceremony which also includes the most prestigious awards.

I can't blame WorldCon for this.  They had no way to know their stream was going to get sniped by a bot that knew no better.  I can't blame Ustream for this.  These are the sort of proactive precautions streaming sites need to take to maintain safe harbor status and keep themselves from being sued into oblivion like Megaupload was.

We need to fix our copyright system.  We cannot continue erring on the side of silence and censorship.  The system itself is so broken that it's long since gone from hindering creativity and innovation to hurting it.

...what.  Why did I not know about this, why did I miss this? :(

Patrick Rothfuss (Kingkiller Chronicles), Jim Butcher (Dresden Files), Emma Bull (Shadow Unit), and Diana Rowland (don't know her) discuss urban fantasy.  With +Felicia Day?  And was +Wil Wheaton there?  I need to watch this later.
We had our first Tuesday Hangout on +Geek & Sundry, The Story Board is a monthly hangout created by +Patrick Rothfuss where he discusses storytelling with an awesome panel of peeps.  This first one was Urban Fantasy, and guested Jim Butcher, Emma Bull and Diana Rowland.  Hope you enjoy the archived video!  Tune in the first Tuesday of each month for more!
