http://tapintoteenminds.com When factoring complex trinomials, usually we resort to decomposition or some trick to make the algorithm easier to remember. What if we actually visualized what is happening when we factor trinomials? Using algebra tiles, we can easily see how to factor 5x^2 + 7x - 6.

+Kyle Pearce Great. I will get in touch soon.

Using area models to multiply a binomial by a constant with distributive property. This is a contextual math problem that may be considered contrived, but really gives a visual in regards to distribution when a single variable term is involved.

Great for making math contextual, visual and interconnected.

In order to add context to finding area and perimeter, we will use a mushroom container and measure in mushrooms. Great for making math contextual, visual and interconnected.

Exploring the relationship that exists between the diagonal length and the side length of a square. Students will have to use the Pythagorean Theorem, their graphing skills and knowledge of proportions / linear relations to create an equation and come to a conclusion.

More contextual problems using visuals to find area and perimeter of a rectangle. Here, we use a box of hot pepper jars.

+Kyle Pearce This is just fantastic. Thanks so much.

Can't wait to check this out. I just worry that the learning curve will keep me working with what I know - photoshop.

I'm an old school Photoshop junkie, but this new tool sounds very compelling. Better still, its affordable, so our students could actually consider buying it! Definitely going to try this out. Today, we watched a video of someone building squares using toothpicks. Figure 1 had 4 toothpicks, figure 2 had 8 toothpicks, figure 3 had 12 toothpicks, and so on. We created a table and a graph then determined how many toothpicks larger figure numbers would have by creating an equation.
