I don't know if this is the best section to put this but I found a way to get the NIC order on windows 2008 using powershell.

In 2012 this is really easy. But in 2008 finding the physical nic order is not straightforward. The main thing I was never able to find was PCI SLOT number [Ex. PCI SLOT 2 (bus 1 device 0 function 0)] which is present if there are adapter cards in addition to integrated.

If this is something beneficial to you, let me know and I will post the additional info when I'm on my desktop.

Here is part of the script in which I use it:
It will get all the NICs, find their order info, store it in a new property, order them, then name them according to their order.

Beware::: evernote likes to add random spaces. If this doesn't work, look for a ill-placed space!!

If you need more clarity on a particular line, let me know. I try to create comments and variables for future users but might not be as clear as I think.

Code:

#Acquire NICs PCI Bus Order and rename the nics based on actual order.
$nics = Get-WmiObject Win32_NetworkAdapter
$NicOrder = foreach ($nic in $nics)
{
Try
{
$registryKey = Get-Item HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\$($nic. PNPDeviceID)
$keyValues = Get-ItemProperty $registryKey.PSPath
$PCISlot = $keyValues.UINumber
$regSplit = $keyValues.LocationInformation.Split( ";")
$location = $regSplit[ 2].Replace( '(','' ).Replace( ')','' )
$locSplit = $location. Split(",")
$props = @{
"Name" = $nic. NetconnectionID;
"Index" = $Nic.Index;
"PCIslot" = [INT]$PCISlot;
"Bus" = [INT]$locSplit[0];
"Device" = [INT]$locSplit[1];
"Function" = [INT]$locSplit[2];
}
New-Object psobject -Property $props
}
Catch {Out-Null }
}
$nicorder = $NicOrder | Sort PCISLOT, Bus, Device, Function
$i = 0
#go through each nic and name them "nic#"
Foreach ($Entry in $NicOrder )
{
$i++
$Nic = Get-WmiObject Win32_networkAdapter | Where{ $_.Index -eq $Entry.Index}
$Nic.Enable()
$Nic.NetConnectionID = "Nic$i"
$NIC.PUT() | Out-Null
}

Hi. Need some experienced help:

Context: I'm scripting a dell SUU update (directory style, not ISO). The script powershell, it's initiated as "System" through 'onstart' scheduled task, the script does a component comparison which is a switch in SUU.cmd the suu.cmd utilize java.exe to do its operations of comparing/applying updates.

Problem: when I initiate the script it works fine. When the system is in control it freeze at java.exe. The java.exe is used by the suu.cmd and it just sits in task manager as if it's awaiting input. Again it works if I run the script and it does not ask for input.

Question: any reason script run as system would freeze during java operation when run as system but not the user/admin? Any troubleshooting tips?

I know we have made special groups at work to keep certain users on certain versions of Java because it breaks programs. Depending on what the user is doing we make sure they do not get the auto Java updates other users get if it is going to break a program they are using for their job. It is amazing how many of our users it affects.

Sunday is coming

If all we need is a teacher of enlightenment, then Buddha will do. If all we need is a collection of gods for every need and occasion, then Hinduism will do. If all we need is a tribal deity, then any tribal deity will do. If all we need is a Law giver, then Moses will do. If all we need is a set of rules and a way of devotion, then Mohammed or Joseph Smith will do. If all we need is inspiration and insight into the sovereign self, then Oprah will do.

But if we need a Savior, only Jesus will do.
