Computer Scientist. Vegetarian. Homebrewer. Musician.
Introduction
I'm a Googler and a computer scientist whose dissertation was on coordinating autonomous vehicles at intersections. I've been a vegetarian since 2004 for basically all the reasons except flavor and religion. I play the guitar and am a music lover with a very eclectic collection. I also like to run, make my own beer, use American Sign Language, and play with my kids.
Bragging rights
Have 2 kids and survived 7.5 years of graduate school. You can trust me, I'm a doctor.

Trader Joe's is the only place I can find lard-free pre-made pie crusts. Now they also have (relatively) inexpensive vegan marshmallows. I love you, Trader Joe's!

The end of an era... Someone finally managed to get a hold of my Amazon.com Visa and tried to use it fraudulently at a bunch of places. The fraud detection algorithms figured this out immediately. It amazes me how good those are. I guess I have to memorize a new number now.

My annual "fraud detection test" is that I do all my annual charitable donations for the year in one day. Many thousands of dollars go out in the space of a couple hours to numerous deserving charities. The test is if they lock down my card before I've finished donating (forcing me to call customer support to unlock my card)

We should just start calling him "the leader". That sounds ominous enough, right?
Instead of an expression of liberty, the Trump phenomenon is a threat to it.

I mean, my comment was a joke, but I've always found the additional term of endearment applied to dictators and tyrants even more chilling. Trumpians are certainly terrifying.

Too cute! I have to get this on my phone to show to the Navy ROTC students who come in to register at DM when I am there volunteering.

Order somehow got lost in their system, so I had 2 hungry children waiting for a long time. Eventually got my hotel desk to call them and straighten things out. Also had a bunch of stuff show up in my confirmation email that I didn't order, though it didn't seem to affect the price. Some sort of strange bug in their ordering system. It's been almost two hours and I still don't have any pizza.

Food was tasty and arrived promptly. Portions were generous and the service was friendly. A bit pricey for the region, but we were fine with a splurge to mix things up.

Room was clean and quiet. Had a jacuzzi. Didn't get a chance to try the breakfast because I had to leave on the shuttle to Sky Harbor at 0400. They forgot to give me my wakeup call so I had to dash out the door. Cheap, though!

The banana leaf-wrapped, mushroom, onion, and turmeric-stuffed tofu was amazeballs, the fried tofu with passion fruit sauce was great (it smelled undeniably like a fruit roll-up), and to boot, the Bia hơi ("fresh beer" - it's a low ABV lager with a very short maturation process) was 3000 VND (about $0.13) per glass. Highly recommended.

Rooms were clean and quiet. Had a spacious 2-bedroom, 2-bath suite that slept 6 comfortably. Was very conveniently located. Breakfast that was included was better than most, including potato pancakes with sour cream!
