"Jumpin' Juniper," Castle Valley, Utah

The Arches & Canyonlands Workshop got off to a great start on Sunday evening with a fun shoot out in the Fisher Tower area outside of Moab. We've got a great group with lot's of positivity and enthusiasm, which was a blessing this morning out at Mesa Arch when the tour bus full of peeps showed up just before sunrise...

Big wind coming this afternoon as a cold front moves into the area, hopefully bringing some much needed clouds to our skies. Keeping fingers crossed.

I was particularly drawn to the late evening light illuminating this lone juniper and just the tops of the neighboring rocks, creating some much needed separation from the shadowed background. As always thanks for taking a peek and feel free to share.

"Paine Grande Phoenix," Torres del Paine, Chile

Happy Friday everyone! I got a little lovin' from the light gods of Torres del Paine for this one. I hiked out to a distant location and scouted a sweet comp only to bail once I realized the light wasn't going to materialize in right place. I quickly scurried back to a sheltered lagoon where the reflections would be great and was pleasantly surprised when the sky lit up after the sun dipped below the horizon. It's a good lesson in staying flexible and thoroughly exploring an area before you settle on any one composition.

Have a great weekend and thanks for taking a peek. Feel free to share.

"The Wizard's Cap," Olympic National Park, WA

Not sure why I haven't shared this one yet. It somehow went unprocessed until recently. We still have a spot of two for this spring's (small group) workshop in the amazing Olympic National Park. Hit the link for details or to register (treat yourself to an early Christmas present).

Thanks for taking a peek and here's wishing everyone a fun filled holiday season!

"Dawn's Break," Acadia National Park, Maine

Getting back to processing some of this fall's images.  Here's another from Acadia National Park back in October on what turned out to be a rather pretty morning.

We've got dates for next year's workshop with yours truly and +Joseph Rossbach October 11-15, 2015.  Hit the link below for more information or to register.  Acadia in autumn is one of my favorite places to be!

"Smuggler's Notch," Mount Mansfield State Forest, Vermont

Hard to imagine this was made only a few weeks ago during the Autumn in Vermont Workshop.  We had our first spitting snow yesterday and there is a decidedly winter-like shift happening.  We should have the 2015 workshop description and registration page listed by mid-week so stay tuned if you're interested in joining us for some of the best autumn color anywhere in the world!

"Candylands," Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Finished up a great workshop in Moab, UT yesterday. We had some crazy weather during the week, everything from sunny skies and temps in the 80s to high winds and below freezing temps. She's a fickle muse that mother nature.

After getting thwarted by a road closure in the La Sals looking for a grove of aspens we made a snowy drive to Denver for a flight out this morning. Unfortunately, our flight was delayed and now we're not getting back to VT until after midnight. Oh well, gives me a little time to process some images from the trip.

This is from the first night in Canyonlands NP while doing some pre-workshop scouting and shooting. We camped about a 100 yards form this stunning overlook and enjoyed an incredibly clear night sky and stunningly quiet evening before turning in for the night.

As always thanks for taking a peek and feel free to share!

PS, processed on my laptop so hopefully the colors are okay.

"Illumination," Fitz Roy Massif, el Chalten, Argentina

Thought I'd leave you with one more from my recent trip to Patagonia before I leave later today for Moab, UT. Looking forward to getting back to the desert for a few days of scouting and shooting before my workshop starts on Sunday.

As always thanks for taking a peek and feel free to share.

"The Looking Glass," Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina

I haven't been posting here much the past several months, planning to be more regular I promise.

I recently spent 2 weeks co-leading a tour in Patagonia.  After 3 days of getting shut out with wind, clouds and intermittent rain and snow we were finally rewarded with our first glimpse of Fitz Roy. It was fitting and extremely rewarding to get this first look after hiking in the dark to this stunning location. I couldn't have asked for better conditions on this particular morning, fresh snow, calm water and wonderful light.

At one point I stopped shooting to just take it all in. I've been staring at photos of this mountain range since I was a teenager and could hardly believe I was finally there in person, what a great morning!

Thanks for taking a peek and feel free to share.

"Champlain Tempest," Lake Champlain, Vermont

The remnants of a late autumn storm front along the shores of Lake Champlain are always fun to shoot, especially if you don't mind getting a little wet

We still have a spot of two left in our Arches & Canyonlands as well as Olympic NP workshops and registration is now open for a newly added weekend workshop this spring here in Vermont.

As always thanks for having a peek and fee free to share.

"The Moments Between," Lake Champlain, Vermont

So this happened the other night on Lake Champlain…

The title has somewhat of a double meaning.  First, it references the little gap in the clouds that allowed the setting sun to momentarily burst onto the scene, bathing it in the most incredible glow and backlighting the breaking waves.

The second, somewhat more abstract meaning refers to the moments between photo excursions, when I'm home in Vermont.  You see I had just returned from back to back workshops and hadn't even done my laundry yet when a quick glimpse at the weather and satellite imagery had me running out the door to one of my favorite spots on Lake Champlain.  This my friends is what being a landscape photographer is all about, being out in the elements photographing as often as you can, regardless of whether you're in some far flung, exotic locale or in your own neighborhood.

To all my workshop clients this fall, thank you, you're awesome people!  But, don't put your camera down now that you're home and never stop shooting!  If the only time you ever shoot is on photo tours or workshops then it's unlikely you'll become the photographer you want to become.  This isn't a part time avocation, you gotta be all in!  Now get out there and make some images!!!!!

"Ingraham's Afterglow," Acadia National Park, Maine

I just returned from co-leading my annual Acadia National Park Autumn Workshop with +Joseph Rossbach.  We had a fantastic group this year with some really good conditions and pretty autumn foliage.  This is from the night before the workshop started while scouting along the coast.  The sky went off to the west but unfortunately it didn't line up with my comp until the afterglow started.  As is often the case, landscape photography is a series of tradeoffs and decisions about the lesser of two or more evils in the scene.  Honestly, I was bit disappointed with this evening's shoot.  However, after some time I've come to really appreciate this image.  Maybe I'm just too picky…

Stay tuned as we'll be announcing the dates for next year's Acadia Workshop next week.  Hope you can join us!
