So I wrote you a new post, on how I expand my vocabulary, because it's bugging me how shallow it still is. Here you go. Catch!
I have a particular challenge of writing in a language that I learned about 16 years ago, and expanding my vocabulary is on the forefront of it, painfully so. I would love to hear your ideas and tricks on growing it faster, especially those of you who write multilingually. Over the 3 years that I've been writing full-time, I have devised system after system after system to help me. They all collapsed shortly after I started them, but ...

I NEED YOUR QUOTES TO PUT ON THE BACK OF "THE BADLINGS" COVER!!!

So if you have read the last draft, comment with your thoughts here, and I will pick 2-3 of them. So far here is what I have:

"It feels like i'm reading an American version of Enid Blyton - except that you're a lot better than her..."

"A very Alice in Wonderlandy feel to it."

"This one's obviously aimed at a younger audience and it reads rather like Ocean at the End of the Lane."

"I am growing fond of each of the badlings in his or her own way..."

"Your book is sucking me in. I can't stop reading."

"There's an almost cathartic quality to your writing, as if the reader is expected to ride along this exorcism from the mental shackles of linear stories foisted upon elementary and middle school kids by straight-laced yet well-intentioned educators."

"You're doing a wonderful job of capturing the spirit of each story the gang lands in. I love the travelers' quick thinking and interactions in each new environment. Their adventures help me see the source material in a completely different way which is part of the fun."

"The characterizations are really strong, and the description matches the tone and pacing perfectly. I've always loved the dialogue between your characters, because they flow so easily, so naturally. You are a natural storyteller, who bleeds life onto the pages of your works. So, keep bleeding!"

Look what I got from a reader on +Wattpad (about Rosehead):

"This book will now hold a special place in my heart and on my list of "favorite books." Never have I ever read something so vastly original, whimsically unique, and strangely thrilling. You kept me on the edge of my seat and up late into the night telling myself "one more chapter." This book is exquisite and I will recommend it to all of my friends and beyond. I hope to read more of your work, and that Lilith, Panther, and Ed will make a return someday!"

New blog post, stirred up by reading Elena Gorokhova's memoir A Mountain of Crumbs (which I highly recommend). Maybe one day I'll write a memoir too. Maybe.
TRIGGER WARNING: EXPLICIT AND BRUTAL PERSONAL STUFF. I'm reading Elena Gorokhova's beautiful memoir A Mountain of Crumbs and realizing that even by Soviet standards my childhood was outright bizarre, chaotic, and violent. But maybe it wasn't. Maybe there were tons of children like me who grew up abused in every variety of ways and they simply don't talk about it. Especially women. Maybe it is my duty to talk about it, to open up peop...

Look! New blog post for you! Inspired by reading Anna Karenina.
I had this epiphany strike me while reading Anna Karenina. There is a scene of conflict between Anna and Vronsky (several of them) where the dialogue is almost meaningless if you looked at it as pure dialogue. It has no information in it, no explanations; the lines are broken, unfinished. It was while reading those scenes that I undestood something I already knew yet failed to apply fully to my own writing.   You know how they say, y...

Fan mail of the day:

"I've been enjoying my respite from social media. It was good to cut all ties and stop what felt like an emotional freefall that no one can understand, however there was an unexpected side effect I had not anticipated...  Ksenia Withdrawals! I didn't realize how accustomed I had grown to your daily 'online banter'...if you can infect me with Ksenia Withdrawals (which is nearly impossible as I don't allow myself attachments to anything... except maybe whiskey), then just imagine how many others out there are now addicted?!  You're infectious! No... contagious? Intoxicating, with the notion that anything is possible?! Yes, that's it :)"

New blog post for you. About +Wattpad. About why it's a great idea to share your books there. (Because it is.)
How do you like the idea of sharing your ebooks for free? If you don't like it, if it doesn't sit well with you, then this blog post is not for you. There are as many ways to get the word out about your book as there are writers. What I'm doing with my books is not considered a traditional way of marketing them. It works for me, it might not work for you.  However, if you're an indie like me who has started with nothing, may I put a ...

Guess what. My life is scheduled for the next 2-3 years pretty tight. Here is a new blog post for you with my complete novel writing schedule, when what comes out and what it is about and what genre and stuff.
Yes, yes, yes! ROSEHEAD sequel is coming! It will be called DOGWOOD. And maybe there will be even more than one, I don't know. I'll see how that one goes, but I know you have been clamoring for more Lilith and Panther adventures, and I shall oblige.  You have been asking me now for a while about all those upcoming books and what their titles are and what they are about and when they are coming and all that jazz. So this is a post pro...

Lookee. New blog post, just for you. Because you asked. GETTING OVER THE SLOG IN THE MIDDLE OF A DRAFT.
I'm smack in the middle of this stinking swamp right now. It's oozing at me green tentacles of slime and fuming my nose a mix of noxious gases and...well, it happens in every book I write, but only now do I see it clearly and know what it is, this dreadful viscous middle of a draft when the excitement of the beginning has worn off and the catharsis of the ending is too far away to be felt yet. I'm in the middle of the first draft of T...
