No, it's not that; the article says Columbus already knew America was here because it had already been found, not the find by the Vikings, but someone nearer to Columbus' time.
I thought it wasn't a new or controversial theory that Cabot had landed on something North American. The English fishing fleets got pretty far west sometimes, and people still fish off Newfoundland (<-- coincidence it has that name?).
The article makes it sound as if Cabot had found a good deal more than has been known, but research on the matter was destroyed, so we may have difficulty finding out more about it.
