Thank you Dennis of Talk Better for your kind words about our recently concluded Marketing Mojo event for entrepreneurs! It is people like Dennis and countless enthusiastic entrepreneurs who keep us going with this event. This is our 6th year running the event at the eclectic, unusual China House Cafe. Check out our final one for the year on 28 Nov when you visit our website at redboxstudio.com

I'll be a lead facilitator at this event on Monday and Tuesday, 24-25 Sept, at Ixora Hotel, Prai. It's a Penang State Government conference that brings together some 400 delegates (men and women) to discuss entrepreneurship - from starting a business to charting a successful roadmap. If you want to join this conference, it's only RM100 for the 2 days (what an absolute deal right?) but you have to walk in on Monday morning as the e-ticketing is no longer available. And if you're attending, come by and say hi!

I've been really fortunate this year to be invited to events that are a little different from my usual speaking. From 7 to 9 September, I’ll be participating as a mentor in a tech event called Startup Weekend George Town and it's the women's edition. Check out my blog post below.

The advice I gave someone which I thought would be quite helpful if I shared it here too.

1. Take up projects. Be the first to raise your hand and lead the project. You will always learn more when you're involved. And if it scares you a little bit, that is the right degree of challenge that you need.

2. Read. I love how books can be mentors too. Get this book - The Leadership Challenge by James Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner. It shows you what leaders need to have and what leaders need to be.

3. Listen to podcasts on leadership. You can find many of these online at iTunes. I recommend Michael Hyatt's podcast.

This week's website question - "What happens if you decide to close or shut down your website?"
Add a comment...

I was talking to someone who enrolled in a digital marketing course yesterday and she agreed with me that if a business owner doesn't have a website, one can't really do any marketing online. Because advertising for advertising's sakes won't help. You need to lead people back to your website after you put up an ad. This is the missing link that most business owners don't understand. No matter how amazing your sponsored post is on FB, eventually interested people need to get to your website. What will they see when they get there? That's the question you need to answer as a business owner. Otherwise you are just throwing your money down the drain.

What do I do when I am not in meetings? I take the day to comb through our websites (yes, we have more than one). Your website is your online asset but you need to review and update it every month if you can. If you cannot, try setting aside one day out of every 90 days to see if things are still up-to-date or need some refreshing. Links can be broken or some pages may be irrelevant. It helps that I can immediately spot issues and correct the issues. Often, when I am reviewing our websites, I will get ideas for creating blog posts or even social media updates. A lot of what we do is behind the scenes so sometimes we need to call out what we do. This also helps clients understand how we continue to add value to their businesses. Do you go through your website once in a while?

Well, think of it as sending off bad luck in a way! And we are both proverbial optimists. We see the good in every bad situation. So think of it as a minor dent in the wallet but a big save for the rest of the other things you do. But I agree. A good book does cure much of the crazy stuff of life!
