Bear and I love campfires. We like sitting around them at home with good friends, visiting and grilling sausages, setting marshmallows aflame as the sun sinks down through the trees and kookaburras cackle overhead. There's nothing quite like the dance of flames and shower of sparks against the night…

This has been the craziest winter I've ever experienced. Last week we were bundled up in every layer we could find, huddled close to the heater, clasping cold fingers around hot drinks. Today I'm barefoot, in a sundress, hair up in a pony tail as I stroll through green grass and turn my face to…

It is dark and cold, quiet and cozy as Bear and I hunker down in our little house keeping warm and recovering from a pernicious flu bug we picked up on our travels. The weather has been perfect for recovery, cocooning us in clouds and rain and solitude, giving us time for long naps and big bowls of…

For most of my life I thought I was the only one in my family who wasn't artistic. My Dad did leatherwork and photography, Mum painted, crocheted, embroidered, you name it, my brothers could draw, build anything, and even sew...

new post Medieval Cheese-making and Medieval Camp at Sunrise http://www.ramblingtart.com/2016/07/21/medieval-cheese-making-and-medieval-camp-at-sunrise/
My favorite time of day at medieval camps is early morning, especially at Abbey Medieval Festival. The sun casting shadows through the towering trees is sheer magic and never fails to stop me in my tracks and make me so happy to be alive to see such things.I like getting up before everyone and…

Quaffing ale sounds like a delightful way to start the day, +Riccardo Di Capua , if only one didn't have to be able to stand upright the remainder of the day and give lucid demonstrations. :-)

Once a month I plan a few days of hibernation to rest and restore.I let Bear know ahead of time and often he joins in, spending a weekend watching movies, reading books, and taking naps. We plan food that's easy to reheat, give our animals extra feed and water, and cancel any chores and plans so…

new post Storms, Scones, and Blood Lime Marmalade http://www.ramblingtart.com/2016/07/16/storms-scones-and-blood-lime-marmalade/
It's wildly windy this morning, blustery gusts shrieking through the trees and rattling our house. The sky is dark and brooding and I'm so glad to be bundled up inside with hot cinnamon raisin scones and a big mug of coffee.Work is done for the week and I'm looking forward to cozying in for a…

The scones look positively vicious. The kind that leap out of the plate and smack into the viewer's palate. Crumbs all over the pj's too!

Such an inspiring story. How wonderful to press forward with your dream and find so many wonderful people to teach, help, and support you along the way. Your work is gorgeous.

But you see? The sad reality of Medieval life was precisely that. Misery, poverty, little - if any - to eat. And rain, rain, rain all day, all night, all season long. You did have a very Medieval experience after all... VERY!

Rambling Tart: building a beautiful life
Introduction
My name is Krista and I'm a 30-something Danish-Canadian lass. I am a writer, traveler, and cook, fledgling artist and reader of books.

I am a writer. My first article was published when I was a 12-year-old girl living in Canada and dreaming of being a real writer. Since then I've written for all sorts of projects and people from newspapers, magazines and books to prisoners, artists, and real estate agents. I've loved all of it, but my favorite things to write about are travel, food, and fascinating people.

I am a traveler. I have been traveling and exploring for 18 years and love every amazing, embarrassing, and wonderful moment. I've traveled by train, boat, plane, foot, and car and each one has its own delights. I've lived on a boat in Russia, in an apartment in Portugal, and now make my home in beautiful Amsterdam, saving my pennies to move to Australia this fall.

I am a photographer. I love capturing the world around me through grand vistas and beloved monuments to favorite meals and teensy flowers on the forest floor. Recording daily life is sheer delight.

I am a food lover. A simple girl at heart, I'm equally happy sitting around a campfire roasting marshmallows or digging in to a 5-course dinner at a Parisian hotspot. While I don't mind cooking just for me, I find it way more fun to cook for my family and friends, everyone clustered around the kitchen counter nattering away while I stir, roast, and simmer.

I'm just me. I love old books, classic movies, singing along with Bing Crosby, and going treasure hunting in thrift stores. I can't get enough of camping, hiking, and sitting by the ocean. And I'm never happier than when curled up in a comfy chair, coffee in hand, chatting away with a dear friend.

When I'm not traveling for work or pleasure, I am supremely happy on a little farm in rural Queensland, Australia, collecting eggs, feeding my goats, and puttering in my garden.

I look forward to getting to know you and hope we get to visit often as we share good food, great conversation, and the little things that make each of our lives worth living. :-)
