As an aside to the existing political nonsense of the past weeks, I'd like to point out to conservatives and liberals both that this is why NO significant reform of any serious system is going to be effective for the foreseeable future: http://www.ted.com/talks/lawrence_lessig_we_the_people_and_the_republic_we_must_reclaim.html?utm_content=buffer07e93&utm_source=buffer&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Buffer
I've mentioned Campaign Finance and Intellectual Property reform a number of times as being FAR more important than the healthcare reform this administration was so anxious to pass. Until we make the politicians dependent upon the majority of the people (instead of the money of the .05%) no reform of any system will affect change that benefits the people.
I bring up IP reform in all this as well because that's the hidden cost to medical machinery, drugs, and more. You want health care to cost less? fix our completely messed up intellectual property laws. It'll reduce your overall cost of living as well since IP insinuates its way into every facet of our daily lives, from software, to drugs, to machines, to music and more. I'm not saying there's shouldn't be IP, I'm saying what we have currently is completely unreasonable, and it'll strangle the economy of this country eventually (assuming some other boogie man doesn't get it first).
Lawrence Lessig said it better than I possible could with regard to Campaign Finance reform. I don't care if you're a liberal or a conservative (or moderate), watch the video, change your view point, and fight the battles in the proper order. Maybe we could get some reforms we can all agree on once the blocking issues and corporate interests are out of the way.
