Jean Rhyne, with the the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, confirmed to KPCC that there are still flowers to enjoy, including goldfields, forget-me-nots, gold cups and lupine. "It's been beautiful out here… I still recommend people come out," she said.
After we shared news of desiccated poppies on social media, our Facebook friends responded with photos of living, breathing poppies! Check them out.

Years before Ezell Ford was killed by LAPD officers, he was the victim of another shooting, one that marked a turning point dividing his promising youth from the difficulties he encountered as an adult.
Ford showed promise in his early years, but faced drug and weapons prosecutions and gang violence before his mental health problems surfaced.

"My personality — call me ebullient, if you insist — was shaped long ago," Fischbeck told the Times in a 1977 profile. "When I talk about the weather, I come on strong, like an evangelist making a high-powered tour of Sin City."
The enthusiastic Fischbeck (and his signature bow tie and glasses) worked for KABC for almost 20 years, according to the station, before retiring.

If you're a spinal surgery candidate these days, you might want to ask your doctor an additional question: Do you have a financial interest in the device you’re implanting?
