Finding Adventure in my Backyard
Introduction
I’m a transplanted Southern Californian living in the Midwest. It’s taken some time, and plenty of searching, to appreciate the nature we have here. In the Midwest we don’t have the jagged peaks or deep canyons others do, but we do have trails to run and hike, rivers to canoe and kayak, and forests to explore. In winter we make do with ski hills, ride fat tire bikes, winter camp and snowshoe to revisit favorite spots.

Finding Adventure in my Backyard: trail running, hiking, camping, skiing, and pretty much want to try everything outdoors, at least once.

Miracle Valley Vineyard 2014 Merlot
On a recent trip to the East Coast, my wife visited relatives who live on a horse farm in the Northwest of Virginia. Across the way lies  Miracle Valley Vineyard  and she brought home a bottle of their 2014 Merlot. I'll admit, I wasn't a fan of the name or ...
Received as a gift on a recent East Coast trip, this Miracle Valley Vineyard Merlot was an amazing surprise.

Nik Weis Urban Riesling 2015
I've been lucky to taste this wine over several years via samples, it's been amazing to see the differences but appreciate the ongoing attention to quality as well. As some of you may know, it's urban not as in city, but as in saint of the wine industry. Li...

Finding The Best Wine Cooler
Visual appearances do not define a wine cooler as excellent and efficient. The best wine cooler must have various aspects: Have adjustable shelves, keep both red and white wines at the best temperature, and must be energy efficient among others. Reviews.com...
There is more to buying a wine cooler than picking the prettiest model.

Lodi Live: Mokelumne Glen Vineyard
Lodi’s Mokelumne Glen Vineyard is an unusual vineyard in arguably the most unusual of California's wine areas (and I mean that in the very best sense of the term). The Koth's collection of German and Austrian wine grapes is up to more than 40 cultivars. Fro...

Holman Ranch Olive Oil
About a year ago, Holman Ranch Vineyards and Winery sent me a sample of their 2012 Sauvignon Blanc to taste and it was quite good, a wine I'd return to for sure. Holman Ranch is more than just wines, though, the property includes many projects:   weddings, ...
The Holman Ranch Olive Oil is wonderfully fresh tasting and has a great creamy mouthfeel.

Kaiken - Premium Wines from Argentina
Kaiken was founded in 2002 by Aurelio Montes, Sr; the wines are now made by his son. The origin of the Kaiken name is the Caiquen (wild geese), birds whose migratory path mirrors that of the Montes family, crossing the Andes in search of a better environmen...

Wannemaker's is expensive, but we've gone there because they are somewhat local. Today it took 30 minutes to check out because their Internet connection was down -- no discount, no effort to get it done quickly. I won't be back.
