Snow Cotton Ready for Picking

The boys regularly come up with ideas for making a few dollars and sometimes ask for my help in coming up with jobs and enterprises for them. It's a shame that these days kids are discouraged from doing anything that might earn them a dollar. It has become so insane that some ridiculous laws have been proposed which would prohibit kids from even helping around the house or farm to do any work an adult might be paid to do!

There was a time when few obstacles were put in place limiting families and kids from being self-reliant and enterprising. For example, a hundred years ago kids the age of my boys could spend days out in the fields picking cotton for $1 per hundred pounds they collect. When I saw this snow cotton bush I thought I'd run the cotton picking idea by the boys, and I wanted to act fast before anyone heard about it and then outlawed it. And before it all melted.

Of course $1 per hundred pounds isn't a fair wage in today's dollars so I had to adjust for inflation to be in step with 2016 values. In today's dollars the boys should probably get about $50 per hundred pounds collected. Then, also factoring in other forms of inflation, taxes, big government and its associated programs, corruption, fraud and mismanagement I came to a grand total in 2016 dollars of 74 cents per hundred pounds.

For reasons that are totally beyond me the boys were not pleased with the proposal to participate in a welfare style make-work project picking fake cotton for 19th century wages. Even before getting hired for the job in an instant they went from being potential workers, to protestors, to forming a union and going on strike. Civil war was on the horizon too.

One of the boys then presented me with a machine he had invented. It could remove the snow cotton from the bush within seconds, thus rendering all the other little manual laborers obsolete. He offered this device to me for 50 cents but I looked at it and realized I could probably get an ordinary stick just like his made off-shore for about 3 cents.

Warm sun reflecting off the house onto the forsythia bush began melting the snow cotton balls trapped in its branches. Some of the boys wanted to get to work quickly before it was all gone but one boy insisted this melt was a sign of an environmental catastrophe which had to be resolved. He even held up an inverted hockey stick next to the bush to scientifically prove Global Warming was wreaking havoc with our crop.

Suddenly one of the boys took a close look at the snow cotton and said "It looks like ice cream. I bet it tastes good too. We should try it".

"mmmm ice cream" another boy said.

We all looked at each other and knew what we were all thinking. A few minutes later civil war, global warming, corrupt greedy government, exploitation of citizens and economic collapse had all been averted as we dove into bowls of ice cream.

As we made our noses sticky licking ice cream bowls my mind began to wander to again think about ways the boys might earn a few dollars. I started to wonder how much I should pay to have them wash their sticky ice cream faces and hands, or wash the ice cream bowls. I decided to keep my crazy ideas to myself this time.

In the end all the boys went out to play and I went out to take a photo of the snow cotton bush. I decided I like the snow cotton balls all over it so they won't ever be picked. We might need them if we ever run out of ice cream!

The Sierpinski triangle

The Sierpinski triangle is a fractal and attractive fixed set with the overall shape of an equilateral triangle, subdivided recursively into smaller equilateral triangles.
Wacław Sierpiński described the Sierpinski triangle in 1915. However, similar patterns appear already in the 13th-century Cosmatimosaics in the cathedral of Anagni, Italy, and other places of central Italy, for carpets in many places such as the nave of the Roman Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, and for isolated triangles positioned in rotae in several churches and Basiliche.
