Sit back with a cold drink and a pair of headphones, because Deep Beatles is back at +Nick DeRiso! Get ready for a very interactive column with many YouTube links. If you like learning about how a song evolves over time, you'll particularly appreciate this one. http://somethingelsereviews.com/2016/07/27/the-beatles-i-want-you-shes-so-heavy/
"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" is both the last time all four Beatles were in the studio, and their last breakthrough.

Hot off the press! My Things We Said Today appearance, where we discuss Hollywood Bowl, John Lennon's protest songs, the upcoming Fest for Beatles Fans, and more. Thanks again to Ken Michaels, Steve Marinucci, and Al Sussman for having me back on the show. Hope you enjoy! https://youtu.be/IRaB1nW0CR0

So thrilled to announce that I'm on the latest episode of Ken Michaels' Every Little Thing! Here are the deets from Ken:

My latest "Every Little Thing" (syndicated show-not the live one!) premieres Thursday on KWQQ, Farmington, IA 9am (cst) and includes RAY PAUL's new cover of a Paul McCartney b-side, Beatles author KIT O'TOOLE ("Songs We Were Singing-Guided Tours Through The Beatles' Lesser-Known Tracks") weighs in on a few songs from the new compilation "Pure McCartney," plus a set of songs released as Beatles/solo singles in the U.S., but not in the U.K. Give the show, and the station a listen!!!

The Platters may seem like unlikely early rock and R&B heroes. Their polished appearance and string-laden covers of standards may not sound rebellious today. Yet their soulful harmonies added a new edge, signaling a transition in pop music. The group proved that the great American songbook could ...

DeepSoul returns at +Blinded By Sound!
Ohio enjoyed a renaissance in the 1970s in that it produced some of the finest funk bands of the era: Ohio Players, Lakeside, Zapp featuring Roger Troutman, and Heatwave, to name just a few. Another outstanding example is Slave, the outfit that produced hits such as "Slide" and "Watching You.

Deep Beatles is here at +SomethingElseReviews ! This is the second in my series on the Beatles' covers, and it's a song that is shrouded in mystery. http://somethingelsereviews.com/2016/05/23/beatles-devil-in-her-heart-with-the-beatles/
“Devil in Her Heart” exemplifies the early Beatles, representing their eclectic song selection, willingness to take risks and ability to transform a cover.

You can also listen to (or download) the latest episode of Things We Said Today at this link! I had a great time talking Beatles (and just a little MJ) with these three distinguished hosts (Allan Kozinn was away for the taping--hope to catch you next time!). Hope you enjoy it as much as we did recording it! Let us know what you think!

In other news, I MIGHT do a Facebook Live event this week. We can chat about the upcoming The Fest For Beatles Fans and other stuff. This will be my first time trying it out, so be kind. ;) More details to follow! http://beatlesexaminer.podbean.com/mobile/e/things-we-said-today-194-kit-otoole-hollywood-bowl-lp-announcement-more-on-beatles-love-10th-anniversary/
Kit O'Toole, author of "Songs We Were Singing," a in-depth study of Beatles songs, joins Steve, Ken and Al (Allan is away) to talk about how John and Yoko used advertising practices in selling peace. We also discuss the announcement of the new Beatles Hollywood Bowl album, and talk more on the ...

DeepSoul is back at +Blinded By Sound! Here's one of my favorite slow jams from the 80s by an underrated group: http://blindedbysound.com/features/deepsoul/deepsoul-levert--/
LeVert had a head start on their successful run of singles in the 1980s and 1990s. After all, two of its members--Gerald and Sean LeVert--boasted an impressive pedigree, notably their father Eddie Levert. The founder and lead singer of the O'Jays, Eddie was initially not on board with his sons ...

My appearance on Ken Michaels' Every Little Thing is being rebroadcast! Full schedule below:

This weekend my latest "Every Little Thing" show premieres with an interview with Beatles author KIT O'TOOLE ("Songs We Were Singing-Guided Tours Through The Beatles' Lesser-Known Tracks." Kit weighs in on the new "Pure McCartney" compilation and picks a few overlooked McCartney songs to talk about. Also, RAY PAUL covers a solo-McCartney b-side, and a set of Beatles/solo songs that were singles in the U.S., but not in the U.K. Here's a list of the radio stations carrying the show this weekend, with their time slots! My new Deep Beatles is finally here at Something Else Reviews! This is the final entry in a series on some of the Beatles' best covers (don't worry, I'll do another series in the future--a reader has already requested "Slow Down"). Here's a cut that, in my humble opinion, surpasses the original version. And it was pretty darn good! Enjoy.

By the way, I know the video clip at the beginning of the article is listed as having been removed for copyright reasons. We're replacing it with a new clip ASAP. In the meantime, just haul out your CDs, LPs, or log on to Spotify to listen while reading. :)

“Please Mister Postman” illustrates how the Beatles adapted other musical forms to create their own sound.

This King and Goffin track typifies the Beatles' early era, a time when the band was forming their own identity.

New DeepSoul at +Blinded By Sound! Here is my tribute to another recently departed talent, Billy Paul: http://blindedbysound.com/features/deepsoul/deepsoul-billy-paul---let/
In a difficult year filled with the passing of many great artists, another talent can be sadly added to the roster: Billy Paul, best known for his 1972 Philly Soul classic "Me and Mrs. Jones." His passionate reading of the lyrics, conveying the torment of an extramarital love affair, ...
