I have recently had the pleasure of meeting Kate O'Sullivan of A Playful Day, a blog centred around making, creating and process. I was delighted when she asked me to be part of her new season show and podcast focusing on women, working and balancing all that with a family.

You can drop by and hear the interview here, and find out more about how I started, and how juggling work life, writing and managing my family works for me.

FREE GIRLS DRESS PATTERN DIY FROM THE BOOK
So the sun is out, and whilst we have such lovely weather, and we know how short the British summers can be, I wanted to share something with you for you to make. This flower collar dress style is bold and playful and perfect to introduce your little one to nature.

The flower collar dress is the perfect for makers with some skill level as the sewing around the collar which is bagged through requires some precision, and extra care, but don't let this put you off, as the dress itself is quite easy to make. You can choose from a plain or printed fabric - I love the classic Delilah Tana Lawn from Liberty London , or choose something funky from The Homemakery You'll need approximately one metre, plus contrast for the collar.

The pattern itself is the simple A-Line dress block to which you can add funky pockets of applique using the templates form the book, so it's a really simple and adaptable start for you.

Meanwhile I've had an incredibly busy few weeks working with my super stylist photographer team Jenny Murdoch and Will Shaddock creating some more stunning images for my second book which will be available in Spring 2016 . More about that soon. For now: Happy Sewing!

PS: Don't forget you can follow me on Instagram for some back stage peeks.

Wild Things : Funky Little Clothes to Sew
Launch day is almost here and I can't wait to share with you the first of many makes for you to create heirloom pieces yourself. The book contains a full range of patterns, templates and ideas which are interchangeable, and allow you to make entire wardrobe of beautiful clothes for your little ones. and there's something for every skill level too. To buy the book visit here:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kirsty-Hartley/e/B00OA19TSO

I started sewing at the young age of around ,then gradually progressed to outfits for myself and friends to wear on nights out as a teenager in the 80's. And so,after saving to buy my first sewing machine I was unstoppable, shaping my career in Fashion, and then as a design lecturer.

What I have learned most in the process of setting up Wild Things ,and writing the book,is to remain true to myself. As a designer and maker, working with my hands and enjoying mixing colour and pattern has become a way of life for me. I've met some amazing like minded people along the way from whom I have learned so much.

I would encourage any aspiring maker to have a go,and find what works for them, to develop their own style and skills bit by bit, not expecting perfection, but to move on with those happy mistakes

I'll be sharing ideas with you here along the way, and would welcome your feedback, comments and any questions you might have.

Don't forget to win a signed copy of the book you can sign up to receive regular updates here
