I was watching the Charlotte NASCAR race last night with my girlfriend. We saw the Jimmy Johnson crash and I was explaining to her how much safer the cars and tracks had gotten in NASCAR. I was saying how it wasn't just Dale Earnhardt that had died but also Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr, and Tony Roper within a span of a year. As I was telling her all the improvements they had made to the NASCAR cars and tracks I was thinking about Indy car open-wheel racing and if it was as safe. I'd like to think this is their 'Dale Earnhardt' moment but I really don't know what more they can do to make it safer than really taking a close look at which tracks they run on. Such a tremendous tragedy.
I'm so sad Dan Wheldon died today. I don't know what to say.
