Snowflake-a-Day #46
This is a near-perfect example of a simple star snowflake. Small simple branches on the exterior, but complex details inside. You’ll really enjoy viewing it large!

Snowflakes like this don’t come along every day. The near-perfect symmetry is quite rare, and I watch every snowfall of each winter to try and find the most symmetrical crystals. Yesterday was the snowfall to put all others to shame in terms of symmetry, but also in terms of geometry. The structures here balance each-other out very nicely!

I likely admired thousands of snowflakes while shooting far fewer. Some didn’t have the right “character” or the right contrast. Some were too similar to others just recently photographed, but this one? I could never pass it up. It was just my luck that I came across it, after filling up a 256GB memory card and going back out for more.

I shot about 300GB worth of snowflake photos in a single day. Get while the getting’s good I suppose! When little gems like this are falling from the sky by the millions, it derails much of the day’s plans. The efforts are worth it and the backlog of other work simply has to wait when the opportunity arises… I hope for a day like this each winter.

The dainty details around the outer edges of the hexagon are created entirely by bubbles and cavities in the ice. They began to form during the branching process, which happened differently than with most snowflakes. It appears that cavities in the ice formed at the corners, which allowed the crystal to effectively split in half in these regions, growing the six branches on the lower half of the corner, and the top half maintaining the hexagonal shape – you can see the outside still retained even though the branches started before it.

Slight variations in environmental variables resulted in the inner bubbles. You can tell that the snowflake moved back and forth between solid growth and unstable growth, allowing for cavities to form in the thin prism facets of the ice. These slight shifts add a lot of beauty to the overall fractal design, creating repeating symmetrical patterns that help us define the beauty of nature.

This snowflake was fairly small, likely between 1 and 2mm in size. The smallest things can beautiful, and spending even the shortest time admiring them somehow makes the world a better place.

To understand the true beauty of cloud physics and how to photograph it exactly as you see here, you need determination, luck, and a copy of Sky Crystals: https://skycrystals.ca/book/ - everything you need to know is within those pages. :)

If you’d like the best possible representation of snowflakes in a single image, spend a few moments looking at “The Snowflake” print: https://skycrystals.ca/poster/ - this image is the result of five years of work with the subject, and that work continues today. While the poster is finished, the search for the perfect snowflake continues!
