One of my mentors tells a story about the simple act of going grocery shopping - something so simple, so mundane, you'd think it couldn't be a life-altering event. But having done the awkward shop, the one that only parents with a certain kind of children really understand, the one where you exchange utterly bizarre looks and conversations with strangers who feel entitled to such things because your kid is different, I'd say shopping for milk isn't an "ordinary" thing to a lot of us.

His story is about realizing how much easier the world was to navigate without his daughter. Realizing that the problem wasn't her - the problem was people's expectations for her, people's view of her, people's reaction to her. The problem was other people.

Now, I say this all the time, and it's something I've said for years - "the trouble is 'people', because a person can be smart and wonderful, but people as a collective are so much effing work."
So much effort. So exhausting. So hard to avoid.

But sometimes they surprise you - sometimes they amaze you - sometimes they're worth the aggravation because you're sitting in a coffee shop and trying to get through a meeting you didn't want to be at for something and they tell you - "Hey, I get it that's not what you signed up for, but goddamn, he's awesome."

_Yeah. My kid? He's awesome. _

You were wondering where I was going with this - and that's where. It's impossible to arrive at any other destination on this journey - because Nicky oozes awesome wherever we go. He brings love. He shares his joy and enthusiasm for the mundane and ordinary. He promotes hope and courage at a level I never would've comprehended in the world before him. He throws light on those "other people" that converts them from obstacles into some strange sort of cheerleaders.

He doesn't make me want to build a better world - he's doing it for himself, and he demands we stand up and join that effort.
I've said before that he is more - that's where the seed for any campaign about "more" I've ever pitched came from - and he is. He lives up to the promise of all that is more every single day.

3-21 is World Down Syndrome Day - do something MORE.

There's a cool photo montage from NWDSA families showcasing all it means to be MORE over here: http://youtu.be/oixMKY7tRe0

totally made me ^____^

i want to squeeze his adorable little face!!

ahh, i've been blessed to be an unofficial sister to Corinne, a wonderful woman with DS. she is amazing and such a riot! and the things that come out of her mouth, sometimes, shocks everyone, but mostly those who don't know her. she's too darn smart for her own good and far surpasses any expectation anyone has for her.

it's so unfortunate that so many people chose to be wary of the unknown and will never know what it's like to be loved by someone so special! ^_^

Also... if you're busy or feeling like you'd rather just grab-and-go on Thursday... +Bad Habit Room's amazing bar staff will gladly fill your growler with any of the amazing donated beverages from +Fort George Brewery, +Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom, +Reverend Nat's Hard Cider, or pFriem Family Brewers for $20 - they'll even sell you a jar for $3 and fill that for $10 if you're thirsty but forgetful...

ALL of the beer, cider, and wine (which they don't do in growlers, sorry) money goes to support the +Northwest Down Syndrome Association and their amazing Kindergarten Inclusion Cohort program - providing families across NW Oregon and SW Washington the resources they need to help their children make the best start in an inclusive educational setting.

What's that you say? The Kölsch isn't quite your style? That's ok - +Fort George Brewery has kindly kicked in another whopping 50L of beer, their tap for The Toast is Next Adventure Black IPA. +Bad Habit Room - December 5th, from 5 to 10pm, all proceeds go directly to the +Northwest Down Syndrome Association's inclusive education programs in support of local families... #kegsforkids   #allbornin   #beerislove

If you were all inspired by the notion of #kegsforkids  but still haven't found that extra shove it'll take to get you out the door and into the +Bad Habit Room this evening, maybe knowing it's the 60th anniversary of the end of Prohibition will help...
