Validate.
verb (used with object), validated, validating.
1. to make valid; substantiate; confirm:
2. to give legal force to; legalize.
3. to give official sanction, confirmation, or approval to, as elected officials, election procedures, documents, etc.

On the surface, to validate something means to say "yes! that is true, accurate, or good," but it's not so simple when it comes to offering validation to other HUMANS. Validation is something we all CRAVE...and that doesn't necessarily mean having other people tell us we are (or what we are doing/feeling) is good, true, accurate, or "right."

Join me for a little lunch-and-learn this Friday at noon Mountain Time on Periscope as we discuss the art and beauty of validation. The nuances of the art of validation can vastly improve ALL of your relationships, both personal and professional...so you may want to tag your friends, family members, co-workers, and team members. I hope you can join me live, but if you can't, you can catch the replay on my Vimeo Periscope channel a few hours after the live 'scope!

You can download the Periscope app in the app store, then follow me at @KimberlyMahr https://www.periscope.tv/

As you know, I am a huge believer that we have the power to shape our experiences based on our outlook about them and the language we use to describe them

In this brilliant #TEDtalk by @kellymcgonigal she suggests that stress itself does NOT need to be a detriment to our health and well being and in fact, that if we make stress our friend, it can have huge benefit!

“The harmful effects of stress on your health are not inevitable. How you think and how you act can transform your experience of stress. When you choose to view your stress response as helpful, you create the biology of courage. And when you choose to connect with others under stress, you can create resilience.”

So if Monday has you “stressing out,” watch this video and see if you can’t make stress your friend!

On a constant quest for knowledge and self-improvement, I am knee-deep in a continuing education series for therapists exploring leading-edge discoveries and teachings in neuroscience,
trauma, mindfulness, and attachment therapy.
.
As with most things, I am gaining HUGE personal take-aways from material that is in large designed to develop my clinical repertoire. Today, in listening to Gay & Katie Hendricks (hendricks.com),I was reminded of a simple yet powerful relationship building tool:  Five to one.
.
In all relationships, be they business, friendship, parent-child, or romantic, if we intentionally commit to a practice of (at least) five validations or affirmations to every one offering of feedback, we will vastly improve the tone and dynamic of the relationship.
.
Pay attention to the people close to you. Notice the little things as well as the big things. Notice their skills, their strengths, and the value they bring to this world and affirm them. This lets people know that you SEE THEM and that they are important to you…and it feels GOOD!  Make this a regular practice, over time increasing the ratio to 10:1, 100:1, 500:1, 5000:1 and then watch the relationship deepen and strengthen!

In both my personal and professional life, I have kind of a love/hate relationship with “difficult” books. You know the ones…the ones that elicit that white-hot flush of shame in your chest, the ones that make you cringe, the ones that make you read while shaking your head or peeking through hands covering your face because YES! The author is ONTO YOU!
.
Those same books are the ones I cannot get enough of.  They draw me in and push me out of my comfort zone. They shine light on aspects of my personality, patterns, and behaviors about which I’m not particularly fond or proud, and they show me the greatness of which I am capable. These books are CATALYSTS.
.
The books that make us squirm, the books that challenge us, the books that confound and annoy us…THOSE are the ones we need to be reading.  Because we never really learn anything from easy reading.
.
Two of those books for me are “When Things Fall Apart” by Pema Chödrön and “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield. I have read and re-read these tomes countless times and each time they’re done beating me up….I GROW!
.
Share with me a book that has recently challenged the heck out of you in a GOOD way….

Guilty.

Daily I get a bazillionteen drop-everything-and-do-it ideas.  And I start running, full of enthusiasm and energy.

But then (squirrel!) life and other distractions get int he way and I often drop the ball.

Here’s what I’ve learned: That’s a horrible waste of energy.  When you start something, unless you’re willing to take it all the freaking way to the finish line, why bother even starting? Seriously…what a waste.

So, starting today, I vow to be more intentional. To keep a notepad full of these amazing drop-everything-and-do-it ideas and flesh them out. Sit on them. Roll them around for a bit in my head and then cherry pick the few that have legs.  Then pick up the baton and start running.  Running with all my might.

Who will run with me?

When we’re feeling restless, angry, frustrated, or fearful, our tendency is to “busy up” and change it; to fix it or make it go away.
.
But most of the time, this urge to DO SOMETHING simply adds fuel to the feelings and adds a certain measure of anxiety to the mix: “I should be doing something!” It implies that there is something bad or wrong with feeling mad, sad, or bad and that invalidation of perfectly normal and healthy emotions sucks.
.
Honestly, the BEST thing you can do when you’re feeling all the uncomfortable feels is to do nothing. Yep. Honor whatever you’re feeling in the moment. Notice it. Name it. Embrace it. Allow it. Be grateful for it.
.
Because in these moments of allowing, you are practicing the most radical form of self-love: ACCEPTANCE. ❤️

Many, if not most of us are plagued by questions of worthiness. Even if not outwardly visible to others, these feelings can be subtle and deeply rooted in messages we have received over a lifetime and sometimes manifest in self-sabotage and failure to fully own our place in the world.
.
But when we begin to accept our divinity and the fact that we are beautifully and perfectly unique, with a purpose ONLY we can achieve in our time here, the veil parts and clarity and power become ours.
.
You are perfect. You have a role and a destiny that is critical in this world. Once you accept your perfection and this calling to serve, questions of worthiness disappear and you will begin to tap into your full potential.

"If you don’t know your purpose, discover it, now.
.
The core of your life is your purpose. Everything in your life, from your diet to your career, must be aligned with your purpose if you are to act with coherence and integrity in the world. If you know your purpose, your deepest desire, then the secret of success is to discipline your life so that you support your deepest purpose and minimize your distractions and detours."

One thing I commonly hear from seekers is "I just don't have enough time." They never seem to have enough time to build a business, learn a skill, practice a passion....to get to the business of DOING whatever it is that lights their fire and helps them achieve their highest and best potential.

Well I call bullshit.

It's not about how much time you have. If the fire burns brightly enough, it's how you use the time you've got that matters. One hour of intentional, focused attention is better than 8 spent frittering away without direction. Stop making excuses; use the time you've got to create the life you want. This is your chance...
