I blame nanowrimo. Good for motivation, horrific for quality.

A friend recently asked me how I am able to go from writing about an incredibly dark and disturbed world at 3pm, to collecting my kids from school and being a parent at 3.30pm.

My response to her was, “I just can. If I couldn’t, I probably shouldn’t be writing dark fiction.”

Her question did make me think about how it was possible for me to transfer so easily between the two, though. Much of my novel’s narrative takes place in a messed-up, dystopian society, where I am able to let my mind explore the darkest corners of humanity. One of my beta readers informed me that if were ever in charge of the new world order to kill her early before any of the drugs happened to her. Best feedback ever.

But how is it that I can then turn that off and be a (self-confessed kick-arse) parent when I pick up my kids?

It's actually pretty basic, I think.

I'm just about to the point where, when someone asks what I'm doing in retirement, I'll say "killing lots of people"....leaving off the part about the killing being done by my characters...

Have you ever made a significant career change in your 30s or 40s? I mean, a motherflipping DRASTIC change that is risky and requires going back to Uni and then doing shitkicking clinical work and then maybe, just maybe you’ll get to do the thing you think you will love?

Well, that’s where my head is at right now.

Wow, wow, wow. And here I was changing my novel's disease from a prion disease to a virus because those pesky prion diseases were apparently incurable. Sorry geeking off on the medical science a bit. Pardon me.

http://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/first-vaccine-mad-cow-disease-deer-shows-promise
In a world first, scientists have developed a vaccine that is successful against a prion disease; a rare infectious disorder that causes progressive brain damage. The researchers were able to demonstrate that their novel vaccine was effective against chronic wasting disease (CWD), a fatal illness affecting deer and other animals.

Science has a habit of creeping up on you when you least expect it. Still, on a positive note, those pesky prions look just like Christmas decorations! 😉
