My history of ebook readers goes back more than 15 years, when I used to read poorly transcribed out of copyright works on my Sony smartphone.

My first dedicated ereader was the black clad CyBook below, a Christmas present from my Dad which seems shockingly expensive looking back. It was a cutting edge device but lacked the support and infrastructure that also doomed many of the other early devices.

It took the arrival of the Kindle to change all that and I still have mine, in a fetching baby blue case, working perfectly after years of hard use followed by years of no use at all. Why the sudden change?

The Kindle Android app brought me back full circle, reading books on my phone again. This time the screen was bigger and better, and the books - thankfully - properly edited and formatted. When I got my tablet a few years ago it's bigger screen and unused storage space made it preferable to my phone and lead to me carrying both on a daily basis, but even it has fallen out of use.

The device speed, screen size & quality, storage space and overall technical brilliance of my current phone (the jaw dropping OnePlus One) has rendered it obsolete. My kindle and tablet seemed unbeatable when I first started using them but over time each were eclipsed by better tech. I wonder how long it will be, and what form it will take, before my current darling is also put aside.

When Ireland introduced blasphemy laws in 2009 it was a major step backwards for the Republic's transition from theocracy to modern secular state. However, now the Irish government has promised to hold a referendum to repeal the controversial laws.

Saw this picture being shared on Facebook and my first thought was that it had to be a hoax.

Sadly it's from a real campaign: http://freethoughtblogs.com/.../09/this-is-a-real-thing-2/

No I didn't.

Is there ever a real need for homophobic slurs?

"Since the first Sunday Assembly in Islington, north London, in January last year attracted 200 people, the “atheist church” has mushroomed across the world, with a mission to live better, help often, wonder more. On Sunday, 35 assemblies were held across Europe and 16 in the US. "

I've heard about this. Some Atheists enjoy the socializing aspect of church, but don't believe in God. I disliked church, but I suppose some people were into it.

Last night's episode of Real Time with Bill Maher ended up with Bill and Sam Harris trying to discuss the difference between criticism of Islam and islamophobia while being shouted at by Ben Affleck who totally ignored everything they said.

People can change, +Meme Liszt! The world and its history is proof of that. It wouldn't be easy, but if we put as much effort into education as we did into defense, or even half as much effort, don't you think we'd get somewhere?

I suppose they might but if you could find one that would be the next trick. The next trick would be finding one that really gave a fuck what I did to it. Because we are broke they cannot pay them properly so they not the most enthusiastic of public servants

Parliamentary burqa rules 'treat Muslim women as second-class citizens'
Visitors wearing facial coverings will be forced to sit in a separate area of the public gallery shielded by glass panels

_ http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2014/oct/02/parliamentary-burqa-rules-send-signal-of-intolerance-to-australian-public _

Initially I thought this was great news for secular society, ensuring that covering your face for religious reasons resulted in the same treatment as covering it for non-religious reasons. However, after reading that this separation occurs after visitors have already passed through security checkpoints - a process which includes the removal of any face coverings - it now seems a pointless exercise designed to single out Muslim women.

+godlesspothead objectivist One reason more trivial issues get attention is that they are much easier to fix. The way women are treated in Islamic countries is not a simple thing to remedy but saying "That new rule you just made is bad so get rid of it" is much easier.

Once again, when the religion being expressed is not Christian it suddenly isn't acceptable.
