Finished and uploaded the extended abstract to our poster presentation at the Special Symposium on Severe Local Storms at the latest AMS Annual Meeting.  The topic was our damage survey and analysis of the Newcastle-Oklahoma City-Moore EF5 tornado on 20 May 2013

Launched a balloon with radiosonde (for temperature and humidty), a particle imager for counting and videoing cloud and precipitation particles and a downward pointing GoPro so we can see what kind of icing the other instruments were experiencing. Launched in moderate to heavy sleet, with a few snowflakes. Radiosonde data suggested two melting layers (which dual pol radar also hinted at). Balloon made it to about 30 mb (~23 km in altitude) before popping. Balloon is north of Henryetta, OK and we're off to pick it up. #weather #doascience

EDIT: oh yeah...we had a bonus during the launch. OU's RaXPol dual-pol mobile radar was performing RHIs (or vertical scanning along the range) as we launched the balloon and as the balloon ascended thru the cloud layer

Know anyone who is currently getting some winter precip (sleet, freezing rain, snow)?  Like folks in Maine?  Or in the Central Great Lakes?  Help the National Severe Storms Laboratory improve detection of winter precipitation by submitting a report through our PING project:

Below are reconstructed hodographs (blue: 0-1km AGL; red: 1-3km AGL; yellow: 3-6km AGL) from Woodward using the Woodward Oklahoma Mesonet station (I averaged the 2115-2140Z obs before the outflow of the storm hit) and the Vici wind profiler (first one is 22Z and the second is at 23Z). The Mesonet station location is marked by the 'M' on the south side of Woodward and the location of the profiler is marked by the 'P' southeast of Vici. The red 'T's are the LSR tornado reports from WFO OUN. If I remember the forecast soundings correctly, that blue line was absent and the start of the red line was near where the surface winds are (but the rest of the hodograph was similar, so the 1-6 shear on the forecasts was large, but 0-1 non-existent). Wish I could find the text data of the forecast soundings from Monday, but it looks like the FSL sounding site seems to have cleaned off the data already.

Combo-photo from our launches yesterday afternoon and earlier (MUCH earlier) today. Thanks to all the folks (almost ALL students!) who came out to help launch the balloons.

First launch was released in freezing drizzle, sleet and probably a few flurries. The balloon stalled (most likely due to icing) b/w 700 and 600 mb and the instruments ended up near Shawnee.

The last balloon was released (at 2AM!) in a moderate snowfall, with some pretty decent aggregates. This balloon went flying! Ascended to 75 mb and got into a 75 m/s jet! It has landed near Disney, Oklahoma.

These launches are in support of winter weather and radar research being conducted at the University of Oklahoma/Cooperative Institute of Mesoscale Meteorological Studies and NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory.

Getting winter precipitation (or really, precip in general)?  Do a science and report it to CIMMS/NSSL!  Helps with precipitation identification from radars and precipitation forecasts from numerical models.

OU meteorology/geography students: we have two job openings within our group at NSSL currently: 1) for our SHAVE project and 2) for radar data quality control. We will most likely be hiring somewhere b/w 4 and 6 students.

Terrific craft beer stop. The guy working (most likely the owner) is nice and friendly. Plenty of stock of Alabama beers, in addition to lots offerings from Westbrook, Terrapin, Evil Twin and many many others. They offer growlers also. If you're a craft beer fan, stop & shop here!

This place sucks. No service...bartender has disappeared for about 10 min now and server's haven't been too helpful without frequent asking. Beer menu is way behind and nearly every beer asked for is out. Tap handles aren't removed nor marked as gone (is getting a plastic cup over the top that hard?!). Was hoping to drop by frequently on my week trip here...guess not.

Stopped for lunch en route to Denver. Very quick service. The BBQ sandwich...meat was a little dry but delicious. The side salads are pretty large, FYI. The beers are great! What a gem of a brewery Hays has. The swag selection is also good (the "Science" shirt is awesome).

Dropped by twice while in Austin for a conference; wasn't too busy either time I dropped in (once for lunch, another I hung out for a good chunk of an afternoon). Awesome tap list...so if you're looking for craft beer, this is the place. The sausages were excellent. The waitstaff was cool and seemed knowledgeable. They also seemed to love to work there, which made the experience much better. The music playlist was great and fed into the awesome, laid back atmosphere.

Stopped by for an app and cocktail around 10PM. The waiter was in training, but did a great job. It was full and pretty loud inside. The tuna app was excellent, the pineapple mezcal drink was great.
