Wow - amazing place, beautiful beaches and the golf courses look amazing. The staff all over the island were terrific - friendly and helpful. There's supposed to be lots of alligators in the ponds, but despite our best efforts we never saw one. We were happy that we went in the fall because it was very quiet and peaceful. Stated in an Airbnb which was very reasonable for the location. A bit overwhelmed by the multi-million dollar homes that cover the island - hard to imagine all that wealth. We'll come back some day, I'm sure.

Kiawah island is beautiful. The sanctuary hotel is amazing. However, The Villas at the Sanctuary are a hell hole. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. This was our fist trip to the Sanctuary. We hear nothing but good things. We rented a villa, checked in and found the condo to be sweltering. We immediately turned the AC unit on and left for dinner and a walk along the beach. 3 hours later, we returned expecting to find at least some improvement, but instead found the thermostat hadn't moved at all. It was just as hot and humid as when we left. In fact, it was hotter INSIDE our unit that the the hot and humid island weather outside. It was 10 pm and there was no way anyone was going to be able to sleep in that sauna. We called the front desk to explain the problem with the AC. They said they could send someone to fix it but it still meant it wouldn't cool down for hours. We asked them to move us to a unit with a functioning AC. 20 min later, we were informed they indeed had another unit ready for us. I asked them repeatedly if they were SURE this unit had a functioning AC and no other issues. They reassured me it was fine. They will send a bell hop with the keys to the new unit. Meanwhile, my family repacks our belongings, loads up the car and waits outside. We wait but no bell hop shows. We call the front desk again, only to be told they were mistaken. The new unit promised to us is apparently not available. We decide to drive over to the front desk, seeing as we had no where else to go, and discuss it directly with them. The kids at this point are in their Pj's and ready to hit the sack but we have no where to sleep. We talk to the night manager, who is absolutely useless. Other than apologizing, he does nothing to make the situation better. He offers us a room at the Sanctuary hotel at a $160 up charge above our rate as a "personal favor" to us (Ha!) and even then it's only for 1 night as the main hotel is fully booked. We would have to pack up again the following day and move. Our only other option is another villa, but again only for the night. We would have to move out the following day as this unit was promised to a guest the following day. Now it's close 11 pm and after a long drive and a long day, we feel left without any good options. We take the temporary night option. We move into the new unit only to find a infestation of cockroaches! Holy hell! The're are huge and everywhere! What kind of management is running this place??? Finally, I must add that we were not offered anything for our inconvenience. Not a free night, not a round of golf, not even a meal at one of the many restaurants on the property. The complete lack of customer service is astonishing for a Hotel property of this caliber. NEVER, NEVER again will we be staying at the Sanctuary Villas.

We have stayed here twice for a legal conference my husband was attending. Once in September 2015 and again in September 2016. Our first experience was great. This past September not so much. The villa they put us in was dirty, bug infested and had mold. We didn't notice the bugs until the morning when I woke up and they were all over the floor and then when we turned on the lights they scurried off to the cracks. The office did move us to another villa which was very nice for our second night but hard to get past the experience of the first night for which we were still charged full price. I realize these villas are independently owned and are only managed by the resort but for the price they should have some minimal standards (higher than that of a seedy motel). Unfortunate, as the amenities and restaurants are outstanding. If we go again we will book through Arbnb or VRBO.
