Sometimes you have to just sit back and soak up the beautiful show Mother Nature puts on... sometimes you have to run like hell, grab a camera and start shooting.

Another play between Sun and Earth from Valley View in Yosemite, accompanied by +Bobby Gibbons +Dan Cardinal and +Glenn Birkemeier, and somewhere in the park was +Amy Heiden, I hope you got a shot of this light show too!

You are more than a good photographer, you are an artist. Your album is one of the best I have seen!

+Bobby Gibbons, +Dan Cardinal, +Glenn Birkemeier and I took the weekend to see some snow in #yosemitenationalpark  .. on the way out we did everything we could to procrastinate going home. Coming into Oakhurst we noticed the fog rolling along the hills and peppered into the hillside were orange trees. Needless to say we were scrambling for tripods and teleconverters!

To answer your next question; no, this was not the last time we jumped out of the car and shot something.

Awesome... I'm glad we stopped.

For being a pretty famous acting dog, Kirby doesn't like taking direction from +Bobby Gibbons  ... but who can blame him? This was lit with an #alienbees   AB800 in a 2x3ft softbox overhead and flagged, Kirby sitting on a 6ft white reflector and a Nikon SB910 used as a kicker (aimed straight down at the white reflector from a few feet away from Kirby). The lights were triggered ttl using the #pocketwizard   mini-flex system for #nikon   (plus the ac9 alienbees adapter).

+Bobby Gibbons, +Dan Cardinal and I went to pick up +Carlos Gauna from LAX last night... well that is telling it short but needless to say, LAX trips are always awesome even when it's a clusterfuck. I am also leaving out the thing Carlos did to #PhoShow 's wash closet.

After all that, Bobby and I went to his garage and set up some speedlights using the #pocketwizard  flex and mini system for some flash fun. This was shot with 2 nikon Sb900s and a Canon 600 ex-rt set on 2 groups (key[A} and rim[B]). What is super cool about the pocketwizard flex-mini systems is that you can use them to trigger speedlights across systems. Anyway, 3am rolled around and so did my eyes... This is the Bobby opossum face, apparently.

Oh Deer.

I really wish he waited 1 second more to look at me! I would have been clear of that foreground garbage. By the time I moved over enough he didn't care about me.. I feel like I could have charged him shouting and he would have just stayed there looking bored... oh well. #deer #yosemite

1, 2, 3...

+Bobby Gibbons and I went out to play with gels and #speedlights at #GriffithObservatory. This night my umbrella got taken by the wind and magically transformed into a palm tree... It's a short story and the ending was not fairy-tale at all, especially for my 85mm... [sad emoticon crying out dollar signs here]... The only solace I got was in the fact that I got this photo of Bobby dancing in the clouds and another shot that he got of me screaming at the city...

In case you're interested, this shot was made with 1 Nikon SB910 (with the included CTO smart filter and diffusion dome on) shot into a Paul C. Buff 48" shoot-through umbrella with the black covering half-flagging the bottom of the umbrella. This was lifted up to about 10' and shot sideways into bobby's 2 o'clock face. I'm not sure of that actual power output, but I was using Nikon CLS to TTL command from the camera a -1.3EV out... but it could have been -1.7EV.. I dragged the shutter a little, put the flash on rear curtain and yelled 1, 2, 3... click.

One more from #nerdsemite  trip to #yosemitenationalpark  before I get back to putting together a presentation about diet-induced obesity causing severe but reversible leptin resistance in arcuate melanocortin neurons.. sounds fun huh? Ok.. about the picture...

We left our cabin at  #TheRedwoods  in #wawona  much later than we had planned (typical of +Bobby Gibbons because he likes to be shouting, "oh shit oh shit oh shit" at every photographic adventure) and we headed straight to #tunnelview , which was fogged in and showed no promise to clear before sunrise. So then we all yelled at each other for a bit, and scrambled back in the Explorineer and headed back up the road a bit. We found a little extra room on the side of the road and jumped out (we do that a lot actually) clambering for tripods and cameras. For an extremely brief moment the sky behind #halfDome  lit up pink and purple and then faded back to grey. I'm telling you this moment was so short lived that +Bobby Gibbons was running a long exposure and this phenomenon came and went within that time. I hope he posts that photo soon!
+Carlos Gauna missed out on this trip.. but he will be there next time!
+Dan Cardinal and +Glenn Birkemeier were also there.. some of the best company one could ask for... never mind the smell.

Doing a little playing with the #alienbeesAB800   and a softbox. Got to love that light quality... so rich and creamy.  Anyway, this is about the best look one can get out of a +Bobby Gibbons  ... And you don't want to know what he was thinking about just then either...

Did some messing around with different light shaping tools... Things got weird when we mixed big and small flash together. We made the Ab800 take on the role of small source and the Nikon Sb910 take on the role of bug source.... And this resulted. This rad image of me was taken by +Bobby Gibbons  of #dirtyTripod  thanks dude!

The Snow and Bored

We also made some timelapses, but not before putting up a couple Sb910's zoomed to 200mm and place high just out of frame (left and right) and making a little long exposure group shot. Got to love that #NikonCLS and TTL, so little thinking involved, so much better than walking to the camera, then to each light, then back to the camera, then back to postion... #mtwilson with +Bobby Gibbons

Lights!

My wife's side of the family has this awesome tradition of going to #Yosemite every year for #thanksgiving... did I mention it's awesome? Well, I have been going at least once or twice a year since 2007 and this year I was introduced to this little mock Tepee campsite along the river. Since I have been really eager to start using artificial lighting in new ways, I set this up a Nikon SB900, SB910 and SB800 all gelled, but the new thing is this: I found some silver 1lb coffee cans laying around (I assume they were for scaring off the bears) and I used them to create larger light sources and as gobos. It was fun, even if this was only a test.

Back to the Post

It has been a while since I've posted here to Google+, so long in fact that I've managed to inadvertently delete my account, twice. Nevertheless, I resurrected my account and here is my first post, a shot from #MalibuBeach looking at the setting, waxing crescent moon over a very low tide making its way back in. This is actually a frame from short timelapse sequence I made wherein the little boats (little here, probably pretty big up close) apparently run from the setting moon. One thing hasn't changed, +Bobby Gibbons and I are still crazy and insane about making photos and boy have we been on some adventures this past year...
