It would be remarkable if we Americans, together, could first, acknowledge and mourn this terrible loss of life, refrain from ALL political rhetoric and finger pointing, then objectively confront this ongoing issue with facts, data and a sincere desire to end this Ground Hog day of self annihilation. We will all have to give something up to solve this problem--and this first thing to go should be our political intractability and unwillingness to engage our fellow citizens whose beliefs differ from our own.

Baby steps away from war zones. My latest on police divers.

"The tar pits were a bubbling cesspool of primordial ooze and a death trap for creatures such as wooly mammoths and saber-toothed cats; they had even held the 9,000-year-old skeletal remains of a human. Today they are a popular tourist attraction on the midtown stretch of Los Angeles' famous Wilshire Boulevard but also, the cops believed, the possible location of a modern-day murder weapon and other critical evidence in a high-profile case."

Once again the CIA tail wags the U.S. dog. Tell me what principles are we upholding when our own government intelligence agencies act with arrogance and impunity, outside the constitution, outside the law? Then they use gullible Hollywood producers to rewrite history into their own seductive fairytale. Would they do that? "Argo-fuck yourself," they would, remember? Probably not much truth in that one either. Torture works? Yep, about as effectively as colonial witch testing. Regardless, PBS's Frontline is on this--as is Intercept's Peter Maass has been from the very start. Read his piece here.

What does it say about us that we're more devastated by John Stewart ending his run on The Daily Show, than we are about the end of Kayla Mueller's life? Why are we more connected to a fake news anchor then a real female role model? How is it that at the end of this news cycle, we will have posted about Stewart millions of times, but still not remember Kayla's name or legacy? Why don't we start building some monuments, viral and otherwise, to the ACTUAL heroes who bravely head into danger zones armed with nothing more than their belief in the dignity of all human beings? Thank you Kayla, for your service!

Dear friends and colleagues, the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong has both galvanized and divided a society in transition from its colonial past to an uncertain future. A small team of eight of my graduate students at the University of Hong Kong immersed themselves as witnesses to that struggle and were commissioned by MSNBC to create this compelling 22-minute documentary which premiered on their brand new digital streaming channel. It is a remarkable piece of work that tells the human story underneath the canopy of umbrellas and mist of pepper spray. I guarantee if you watch the first minute, you'll watch the entire piece. It will reward you with understanding of what's happened here and the inspire you with the passion of those on both sides of the divide. Congratulations to editorial producer Lukas Messmer, production editor Joyce Lau, reporters Jane Li, Filippesi Lanzardo, Vanessa Ma, Amel Semmache, Cal Wong and Vicky Wong. Special thanks to JMSC, Jei Libunao, Roy Ccm and Foon Lee for their technical guidance.

Curious about what's happening with the Islamic State in Iraq? I spent  part of the summer with Kurdish peshmerga fighters in a push to drive the IS out of Jalawla, a small town 80 miles northeast of Baghdad. Thanks to my brother Mohamed for getting me there and the pesh for taking me in. Read it here, on Vice.
