A group of buddies and I took a Mountain Biking trip to Moab, Utah the week of October 4th. We covered a lot of trails and had a good time checking out Utah. Thanks to my lovely wife for letting me go and for being a single parent for a week!

We had a freakish thing happen yesterday in which a mower cutting around the pond for the City of Ankeny hit a cover for a drainage culvert shooting the pin up the second story Master Bedroom window and through the house (in the end about 100 or so feet). You can see by the pictures the force that it hit; ripping the curtain rod from the mounts and shooting it clear across the room and into the closet leading to the bedroom. Luckily Kim had been side tracked and was in the kitchen when it happened. Another minute earlier and things might have been different.

A few safety learnings that we can take from this experience are: 1.) If mowing areas with tall plants, walk the area prior to starting to note obstacles that could be hit. 2.) For properties that have items like culverts or other solid structures that are hidden, mark them with a flag or rod that can be easily seen. 3.) Avoid being near running equipment such as mowers without proper protective equipment.
