Listen.

1967 - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaks to an audience in Stanford University's Memorial Auditorium.  It is the speech where he speaks of riots being the voice of the unheard.   He is turning towards addressing poverty in America (the two Americas) and the Vietnam War.  His demeanor speaks.  He speaks of the "triple ghetto."  It is a powerful speech.  There is a changing wind.

"Dr King contends that there are "two Americas": one "beautiful" and the "other America," which is an "arena of blasted hopes and dreams." He goes on to explain that "we are seeking to make America one nation" and discusses: African American civil rights; segregation; slavery; civil rights bills; the need for "genuine equality"; housing; education; employment; his experiences in Chicago; social and racial inequality; the persistence of "white backlash" against the constitutional rights of minorities; non-violence; "massive action programs"; social stagnation; the Vietnam War; sharing of political power and legislating for social justice. He concludes by stating that: "I still have faith in the future. I still believe these problems can be solved ... I refuse to despair ... our destiny is tied up in the destiny of America."

Empathy is sadly lacking in too many people, religious and non-religious alike. It is a trait we are all served by expanding.
