Chromecast  -

Just ordered a Chromecast also.

Love my Google TV, but having a relatively portable screencast option for $35 is just too good to pass up.  Hopefully the Jellybean update comes to Google TV soon or it will, I think, spell the end of the platform.
Chromecast Google at its breakfast this morning announced Chromecast, bringing the Chrome OS to your TV. Plugs into your TV, powered by USB, and brings you all your favorite Google content. Born from the ashes of the Nexus Q, Chromecast is an HDMI dongle just a couple inches long. It connects, as you'd expect, to your Android phone.

+Michael Beatty That's an interesting question, from the chrome browser I'm not sure they can (the functionality seems to be in the browser itself, not the site page). On android a Dev needs to add the code for this feature, and it's likely repeat offenders like Hulu won't do it.

Chromecast  -

So even though I ordered a Chromecast on Google Play, I went to Best Buy to get one in my hands today.  (I'll be refusing the UPS delivery of the other to get my refund on that).

I can confirm that Hulu will play on Chromecast, but is so laggy that it wouldn't be a useful solution at all (the cast option for Chrome must render the video and audio on the computer and send it to the Chromecast, meaning the audio and video do not sync when it plays back from the TV).  The video is so choppy it moves as a series of still images while the audio plays smoothly.  It seems it would be possible for Hulu to optimize this, however, since it seems Netflix does the same thing (though Netflix plays loud and clear in high quality despite needing a constant connection with the computer to do so).

I will say that YouTube and Netflix work very well on the TV.  Everything is loud and clear, and well synced up.  It does take a few seconds to get the video there, but nothing too extreme.

Google TV Discussion  -

Hi all,

I'm wondering how big of a hard drive the Sony gen 2 can support. I want to get a portable external drive but now I'm wondering if the Sony will have enough power to run it. I use an 8GB flash drive now with some compressed movies on it, but I want something that holds more of my collection.

I found a usb powered 1tb drive on Amazon but don't know that it will work. Any experiences with hard drives? Will they work without their own power source?

+Nathan Olsen : I have no problem streaming from the My Books over my LAN. The problem arises when plugging the USB Hard Drive directly into the Google TV box. Have you tried that?

We arrived on a Friday during the early afternoon, so the museum was empty except for a few incredibly helpful volunteers/curators. They quickly introduced us to the exhibits and the history of the museum, and asked for a bit of basic information about where we are from. They did note that the museum is largely funded by donations, so be sure to bring a bit of cash along to drop into the box before you walk the exhibit floor. The stations are set up based on 3 major time periods, with touch screens and hands-on history for children (or children-at-heart). Take your time reading through the text and looking at the pictures to get the full experience--the museum is small, and not reading these items will result in a very quick (almost unnecessary) visit. The most worthwhile part, for this reviewer, was the 3 classic fire engines (4 counting the steam-powered horse driven model) restored and presented on the museum floor. The small exhibit upstairs detailing items received from the Smithsonian and the purpose of museums in general seems a bit out of place, and very incomplete/in need of more specific purpose/curation. Hopefully that collection gets better funded so that a more permanent version with a more central vision can take place and help the items received fit more clearly into the museum.
