Currently, the earth is covered by approximately 129,444,000 square miles of ocean (http://www.eoearth.org/view/article/154984/). To look at things another way, the total amount of water on planet earth is approximately 332,500,000 cubic miles, of which, total freshwater (including all of the water contained in the polar ice caps) is approximately 5,773,000 cubic miles, or about 1.7% of all the water on the planet (http://water.usgs.gov/edu/watercycleice.html).
So, if ALL the ice and snow on the entire planet melted, the oceans may rise approximately 230 feet. HOWEVER, this has never happened n the history of the planet. During the last major warming period (approximately 125,000 years ago) the seas were about 18 feet (not 230 feet) higher than they are today, and you have to go back 3 million years to find evidence that the oceans were approximately 165 feet higher than they are today. However, even according to NOAA, this level of increase has never been seen in geologic history and would require an unprecedented rise in global temperature and carbon dioxide levels (http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/ctl/cliscibeyond.html) that would exceed levels measured during the Cretaceous Period. During this time, the earth was 20-40 degrees Celsius (36-72 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than it is today. According to the U.S. EPA, the temperature of the planet (if we do NOTHING), is expected to rise 2-11 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100 (http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science/future.html) assuming that the climate change models are correct and assuming that global carbon emissions continue to rise at the projected rates. Even NOAA's worst case scenario predicts ocean level rise of only 1-2 feet by 2100.
So what is the bottom line? Liberal/Socialist/Progressives are lying to you and me. Global Warming is a fact, but anthropogenic (human caused) global warming is still very much in debate. Even if humans are the cause, the people of the USA can't do anything about China, Russia, India, or any other nation moving into toward industrialization. We (the people of the USA) need to treat sea level rise like any other natural disaster. Be ready, be prepared, and have a plan of action. However, we need to DEMAND that the Government (Federal and State) stop lying to all of us.
