Check out the newest post on KevinIsJustFine!

My great-great grandma, Katarina Jelencic, left Croatia with three kids under the age of 8.  She traveled overland to Rotterdam, where she boarded a boat for New York City.  Once in New York City, she had to travel to Joliet, Illinois, again overland, to…
Moving to Hanoi was a difficult decision and one that has come with lots of struggles. I am hoping that the struggle pays off in the long run.

New post on KevinIsJustFine.com - The Stolpersteine of Berlin

#travel #Berlin #germany  #wanderlust

Maybe a glimmer of the sun reflects off the brass and catches your eye. You look down. Maybe you are walking down the sidewalk and the edge of one catches your shoe. You turn around to see what tripped you. It’s a small brass plaque. It’s the smallest…
The stolpersteine of Berlin are part of the world's largest memorial and are a window into a vanished people and a vanished Berlin.

2014 draws to a close and 2015 begins. If you look back over the last year, have you accomplished what you wanted to accomplish? Are you where you thought you would be? I’ve written before that New Year’s Eve is my favorite holiday. Tonight over all other…

If Umberto Ecos' "Foucault's Pendulum" the character Belbo described every human as easily classified into four groups: cretins, fools, morons, and lunatics.

This is the most succinct summary of humanity I've ever read and I intend to apply the classification to my own life.  Now...which one do I fall under?

"The White House is under growing pressure to hold individuals accountable for covering up the torture of terrorist suspects..."

Wow! I can't imagine the horror of being tasked with prosecuting wanton lawlessness especially when you are treaty bound to do so and when we have repeatedly sought prosecution of other perpetrators over the last 50 years - from the Nuremberg trial to Khmer Rouge.

I can't imagine the horror of being tasked with prosecuting the elites with the same fervor as the underclasses.

Amazing photos of a city that I love!  I can't wait to be back....two more months...two more months...
Swarms of motorbikes, cheap healthy food, great coffee and friendly locals are just some of the things I loved about the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi

Sometimes, I think the world is suffering a terminal deficit of simple empathy for one's common man.  So much hate.  So much anger.  We are interdependent and I think our survival as a species depends on this.
I hear you marched in your thousands against my religion. Last week, and last month. You marched against immigrants, foreigners, and anyone a shade darker. I will not draw comparisons to Nazi Germany. I will not call you bigots, I will not insult you...

Riot Squad toys: Train your tots to quash rebellion for their capitalist overlords | Dangerous Minds
“Police Force Role Play Set for kids with Combat Vest, Riot Shield, Badge, Handcuffs, Machine Gun Toy, Grenade, Club & Knife”   I’m not actually particularly against “war toys.” Kids have violent little imaginations, and I don’t think there’s any causal correlation between acting them out and actual shootings—lots of kids have toy swords, but it’s not like we’re dealing with a rash of impalements. That being said, there is something about riot sq...
