Just a quick bugfix release for now. Rolling out to beta first and hoping to promote to release shortly.

Please note that Android P is still a developer preview. For critical issues that are easy to work around (like this one) I'll try to get the fix out to people quickly, but more minor issues on preview OSes will often need to wait.

Fixes

5.5-beta3 Oct 16, 2017

-Searchbar in dock (Nova Settings - Dock - Searchbar in dock - Above or Below Icons)
-Android 8.1 style popup menu (Nova Settings - Look and Feel - Popup menu - Blocks)
-Adaptive icon animations during drag and drop
-Improved speed of applying a new adaptive icon shape or icon theme
-Lots of under the hood fixes and optimizations

Notifications in the long-press menu require Prime, Lollipop or higher and either Dots or Dynamic badges.
Adaptive icon backporting and reshaping has gotten better, more icons are able to be backported and also reshaping is more robust. Checkout the reshaped Instagram icon in the gif!

I'm looking forward to doing more with Adaptive Icon animations, right now it's minimal, essentially just what we've seen the Pixel 2 Launcher do so far.

And for those of you on Oreo that miss the good old days before round icons and adaptive icons, I haven't forgotten about you.
Nova Settings > Long-press volume down to enable Labs
Then Nova Settings > Look and Feel > Adaptive Icons will have a "Prefer legacy" option that bypass adaptive/round icons when possible.

-Intelligently reshape legacy icons to adaptive
-Bug fixes and performance improvements

I've written a bit about the new approach to reshaping legacy icons

I'm really pleased with the results. Looking forward to hearing feedback!

Adaptive icons for all*

Nova Launcher 5.5-beta brings Adaptive Icons from Android Oreo back down to Android 5.0+

As Android Oreo and Adaptive Icons are still in their infancy, not many apps are providing them yet. So we've also added an option to automatically scale and shape legacy icons for consistency. This is still a work in progress as there are some more ideas I have to explore to make this work a bit better.

Nova Settings > Look and Feel > Adaptive Icon Shape

* Requires Lollipop or higher. Sorry.

Known issues:
Dynamic calendar icons don't currently remask to the adaptive shape
Apps using gradient in vectors in their adaptive icon (Plaid) require 7.0+
Apps using drawable aliases for their adaptive icon are not currently backported

5.5-beta1 Sep 10, 2017

-Adaptive icons for Android 5.0+
-Use and control the style of adaptive icons from apps that support them
-Scale and reshape legacy/existing icons to match the adaptive style
-Minor fixes

-Sesame Shortcut integration for long-press shortcuts and app search
-Ability to hide navbar on Samsung S8 (Nova Settings > Look and Feel)
-Update round searchbar style

I'm really excited to see what everyone thinks of the Sesame Shortcuts integration. Users have been wanting more from Nova's app search and I think this is a really cool way of doing it without needing to spread Nova's resources too thin. And of course it's completely optional for users who don't want it.

5.3-beta2 Jun 16, 2017

- Fix double tap gesture after swipe to Google
- Fix Google Page not appear after change of Nova Settings for some users
- Add Google Now settings (Nova Settings > Google Now)
- "Edge Swipe" to Google page which works with infinite scroll, swipe from any desktop page to Google
- New "Overlay" transition open for Google page which should be more responsive especially on lower end devices

I'm really glad to finally have integrated the Google page. It's been a top request for years. There is still some confusion I'd like to cover.

1) Nova Google Companion is never planned to come to Google Play. If it was possible for a Play Store app to integrate the Google page (without root), then I'd do it in Nova directly. The Companion app fundamentally cannot be distributed on Google Play. It is a workaround. If the restriction is lifted, then the Companion will be abandoned and Nova will integrate with Google directly. Nova 5.3 stable will be distributed on Google Play, but you'll still need to sideload the companion to integrate the Google page.
2) Updates to the Companion APK should be infrequent (Like the Nova Prime APK). It does as little as possible, letting the Nova APK to do the real work. However there will be some (At least one before Nova 5.3 hits stable). You can download the latest and see the changelog from Nova Settings > Google Now > Check for updates or https://help.teslacoilapps.com/nowcompanion . We'll also make sure the latest is available on APKMirror.
3) Play Store policies prevent directing users to install APKs outside of the Play Store. To play it extra safe, I'm avoiding mentioning the Companion app at all on the Play Store page or in Nova itself until you install it. This means that the changelog on the Play Store for this beta will likely be pretty minimal.

I'd also like to address the fact that this is unofficial. Google originally had a hard limit of just system apps and for whatever reason that changed to allow debuggable apps. It's possible that this was a complete mistake, there are some other seemingly logical errors in that part of the code. However it's possible that they did it to ease development for other OEMs and themselves and determined that workarounds such as this weren't worth trying to block. Or optimistically they did it hoping that the launcher community would develop workarounds such as this so they could test the waters of what it'd be like to officially open the API. I choose to believe the latter.
So why doesn't Google just officially open the API?
My understanding is that Google doesn't want to deal with the support burden of officially or defacto officially opening the API. The way it works, drawing the Google page on top of another process, is very clever and pushing the limits of Android APIs. You can see some of this if you swipe quickly left and right with the page, even in the Pixel Launcher on the Pixel phones, you'll see some missing frames. This is happening because there is no way to guarantee synchronization of timing between the two apps. When working with OEMs to integrate this API, Google can do some testing to ensure things are in good shape. But with third party launchers running on just about every device out there, there is no way to know how things will behave.
At some point however, that's got to be acceptable to Google because of the huge amount engagement they can get by supporting third party launchers. I'm hopeful that Google will be seeing the Nova Google Companion in their analytics and taking note at how much more you guys are using Google Now than before.

-Dynamic Badges - Badge icons with content from their notifications

We've been working on reinventing notification badges for some time now and are finally ready for testing by the masses.

Unread counts are often misleading. Partially due to API restrictions (I'll save the Android O discussion for another day, but short answer is that it's not going to fix counts). But also because every app counts things differently (messages vs conversations for example). Also the numbers get meaningless. I don't care if I have 3 messages or 5, I care who sent those messages.

Instead of numbers we focused on images. Dynamic Counts pulls images from notifications to badge your apps. For example contact images from messaging apps, album art from music apps, app icons from the Play Store. This also greatly improves the utility of badges on folder icons, where it can show the app, or apps, with notifications instead of just a big numeric count.

But don't worry if you love numeric counts, they're still around via TeslaUnread.
To try Dynamic Badges hit Nova Settings > Notification Badges > Badge Type > Dynamic
Requires Android 4.3+

Normally I go for a nice clean notification bar when sharing screenshots, but that wouldn't really work in this case :).

I'm looking for a new UI/UX designer to help me with Nova Launcher
https://goo.gl/forms/8rcvRtvvfCvSIKhv2

I muddled through Holo design by myself, wised up for Material Design and brought +Liam Spradlin onboard. He's now joining Google and I'll need someone new to design new animations, interfaces and graphics and to update existing interfaces to newer Material Design guidelines and beyond.

This is a freelance/contract position, with workload varying based on upcoming changes or updates to the app.

If you're interested, fill in the form linked above! If you know someone who may be interested, share the link with them!
